זמר I (b. h.) to nip, to prune; to cut. Sabb. 73b זומר וכ׳ וצצריר if one trims a tree (on the Sabbath) for makking nse of the wood. Snh. 26a וזומר כהן (not וזמר) a priest is he. and he prunes the vine (in the Sabbatical year) ; a. ir. Nif. נזמר to be pruned, trnsf. to be checked, unnerved, defeated. Cant. R. to II, 12 (ref. to זמיר ib.) זמנה הגיע שתזמר ערלה של the time for pruning the preputium (cir- cumcision) has come (v. Ex. R. s. 19); שיזמרו . . . הגיע the time has come for the Egyptians to be checked; Pesik. Hahod., p. 50a; Pesik. R. s. 15. -- Lev. R. s. 9, beg. Akhan is named Zimri (I Chr. II, 6, cmp. with Josh. VII, 24) ידו על . . שנזמרו because through him the Isra- elites were unnerved (Josh. VII, 5); a. e.

זמר II (b. h; cmp. זמם I) to tingle, make music, sing. v. זמר. Pi. זמר 1) to sing one's praise. Cant. R. to II, 16 הוא זמרתיו . . זמרני (or זמרני, זמרתיו) He praised me, and I&c. -- Gen. R. s. 91, end (expl. מזמרת, Gen. XLIII, 11) דברים וכ׳ מזמיין שהן things which men praise all over the world. -- 2) to review a lesson in recitative chant (v. זמרה). Snh. 99b top יום בכל זמר chant every day; Tosef. Ohol. XVI, 8 ז׳ תדירה בי ז׳ (the Law says) review me steadily &c.; ib. Par. IV (III), 7; cmp. גמרא.
זמר ch., Pa. זמיר same, 1) to sing. Targ. Ps. XVIII, 50; a. e. -- Sot. 48a וכ׳ גברי זמרי when men sing and women respond. -- 2) to sing a satire, deride. Targ. Lam. III, 14.
*זמר III, Hif. הזמיר (cmp. זמורא) to look bluish. Y'lamd. to Num. XXV, 14, quot. in Ar. (play on זמרי) מוזרת כביצה בשרו שה׳ עד until his fesh (through his lewdness) had the color of a smashed (rotten) egg; (cimp. Tanh. Pinh. 2, Num. R. s. 21, beg., Snh. 82b-- where our w. is omitted).

זמר II m. (זמר I; cmp. זמרה, Gen. XLIII, 11) fruits, (grapes &c.), dessert. Y. Pes. X, 37d bot. (expl. אפיקומין) ז׳ מיני various dessert fruits (Bab. ib. 119b וכ׳ תמרים; Tosef. ib. X, 11 וכ׳ אגוזים).

זמרא, זימ׳ I m. same, song, music. Gitt. 7a מנא ז׳ וכ׳ לן how is it proved that music (at banquets, afte r the destruction of the Temple) is forbidden? Ib. דמנא ז׳ in- strumental music, דפומא ז׳ vocal music. Sot. 48a בביתא ז׳ וכ׳ music in the house--destruction at the threshold. זמרגד, זמרגדא (זמרגדד, זמרגדז) m. (~~~- p~v~o ) smaragd, emerald, colored crysfal (v. Sm. Ant. s. v.). Targ. Prov. XXV, 12; a. fr. (in the sense of a precious stone [v. next w.], and as crystal or spar of copper mine). --- Pl. h. זמרגדין. Lev. R. s. 2 (precious stones).
