חופאה m. (חפא) 1) cover, roofing. Targ. Ex. XXVI, 14; a. fr. -- Targ. Ez. XXVII, 6 ח׳ בית a house (theatre) with awnings. --2) coating, plate. Targ. O. Num. XVII, 3, sq. (ed. Berl. חופ׳), v. חסיא.
חופה f. (b. h. חפה; חפף I) 1) covering, canopy, esp. bridal chaamber; also (=לה כניסה) the entrance of the bride into the bridal chamber; wedding. Kidd. 5a, a. fr. קונה ח׳ the introduction into the bridal chamber constitutes possession (legitimate marriage). Ib. 3a ח׳ למעוטי to ex- clude, as a form of marriage, the delivery by her father to take her into the bridal chamber. Gen. R. s. 94 לא בחופתי ראה was not present at my wedding. Snh. 108a לבנו ח׳ עשה arranged a bridal room for his son. Ab. V, 21 לח׳ י״׳ח בן at eighteen years one is fit for marriage. Y. Succ. חופיא m. (חוף I) 1) rubbing. Ber. 6a דידהו מח׳ from their (the demons) rubbing against their clothing. -- 2) broom. Succ. 32a ח׳ כי דעביד it has the shape of a. broom. B. חוץ I (cmp. אוץ), perf. a. part. חץ [to squeeze in; to be wedged in] 1) to be tight, immovable. Makhsh. III, 8 שיחוצו בשביל that they may become tight (by swelling). Mikv. X, 3 חוצה שהיא בזמן (cmp. part. fem. חולה, fr. חול) if it is tight (immovable). -- 2) to tighten, tie closely. Y. Hag. III, 79a top אותה חצים (חצין) they tie it watertight. -- 3) הון or הצן to wedge in, form a partition; to inter- vene, esp. (at bathing) to prevent the water from toueh. ing the body. Erub.
