חכיננא m. (v. חכינא) wound, snake like; insidious. Targ. Prov. XVIII, 8 Var. ed. Lag. (ed. Lag. a. oth. חבננא, oth. ed. שיגושא; h. text נרגן).

חכיר, חכיר m. (חכר, cmp. חכינא) bent, bowed down. Targ. Ps. XXXV, 14; XXXVIII. 7 (Ar. הביר; Ms. חמר I).
חכיר, חכור m. (חכר) 1) tenant on a fxed rent payable in kind, v. אריס II. Y. Bicc. I, end, 64b לשעה ח׳ a tenant for a fixed term, לעולם ח׳ a permanent tenant (on ground rent). B. Mets. 104a חוכר; a. fr. Pl. חכירין, חכו׳, חכירות, חכורות (חוכרין). Y. Bicc. l. c. אבות בתי חכורי hereditary tenants. Tosef. Peah III, 1. Ib. Ter. II, 11 חוכרין ed. Zuck. (Var. חכורות, חכירות). Y. M. חכירות (חכורות) f. (v. חכיר) 1) tenancy, tenure on rent in kind. Bicc. I, 11 וח׳ אריסות בעלי landlords of properties held in tenure, on shares, or on fixed rent; or tenants on &c.; expl. Y. ib. 64b either אבות בתי חכירי (v. חכיר), or וחכיריות אריסיות בעלי (not וחכורות). -- 2) stipu- lated rent. Tosef. B. Mets. IX, 24 שנים שתי של ח׳ Var. (ed. Zuck. only חכורי) the rent for two years in advance. -- P. חכיריות, v. supra.
חכך I (v. Fl. to Levy Taim. Dict. II, 204s) 1) to restrain, fasten, hook. --- Denom. חכה. -- 2) to grasp (one another), to wrestle; v. הבב II.
חכך II (onomatop.) 1) to be rough; to rub, scratch. Naz. 59a לחוך מהו how about (removing the hair by) rubbing (Tosat.; ולהתחבך לחוך about rubbing or being rubbed)? --- 2) (cmp. הרט, a. חייך) too hesitatte. Ned. I, I להחמיר בזה חוכך היה had some hesitation about deciding in favor of greater stringency (for the expression מנודה; oth. opin. in R. N. to Bab. ib. 7a; denom. of חך, had a taste or &c.). Hithpa. התחכך, Nilthpa. נתחעך to rub one's self against a rough obyect; to be rubbed. B. Kam. IV, 6 שהיה שור וכ׳ מתחכך an ox that scratched himself against a wall; Tosef. ib. IV, 6. B. חכך m. (preced.) 1) scab, sore; trnsf. tribulation, visitation. Y. M. Kat. III, 81d top; (B. Mets. 59b אך, Var. אף). -- Pl. חככים inftammations. Gen. R.. s. 19, beg. (v.,. however, אבאבית). -- 2) cough, catarrh. Y. Snh. X, 29b bot. ח׳ . . . הוא בתחלה first He causes a cold to enter them; (Tanh., ed. Bub., R'eh 10 חיכוך); Pesik. Asser 97b ד הקב״ה (insert בהם מכניס); v. וה.
חכם (b. h.; v. חכם) 1) to be wise, to know. Nidd. 70 ויחכם אדם יעשה מה what must one do in order to be wise? -- 2) (denom. of חכם) to meet for deliberation. Ib. להן נחכם לכשיחיו when they resurrect, we shall meet to discuss their case. Hif. החכים 1) to grow wise, to become a scholar. B. Bath. 25b שיחכים הרוצה he who desires to become a scholar; ib. 175b (Ber. 63b שיתחכם). Ab. II, 5 . . . כל לא מחכים not every one that has a large trade, becomes wise (experienced); a. fr. -- 2) to make wise, to stimulate a person's mind by ingenious suggestions, guestions &c. Hag. 14a וכ׳ המחכים תלמיד a student who enlightens his teachers. B. Mets. 107b פתי ומחכימת and makes the simple wise. - 3) to subtilize, philosophize. Ex. R. s. 6, beg. ה׳ וכ׳ גזרתו על philosophized on (tried to find out the reas- ons for) the Lord's law. חכם, חכים, also חכים (adj. with verbal in- flection) 1) to be wise, shrewd; to be learned. Targ. lI Kings V, 11. Targ. O. Ex. XV, 8 חכימו (חכ׳, h. text נערמו ). Targ. Is. XXIX, 16; a. fr. -- Gitt. 56b וכ׳ דחכמיתו that you are so wise. Taan.. 23b טובא דניחכים that we may become well-learned; a. fr. -- 2) to recognize, to knomw, remember. Targ. Y. II Gen. XXXVII, 33 (some ed. חכם Pa.). -- Targ. II Esth. II, 18; a. fr. -- Lev. R. s. 30 וכ׳ את ה׳ doest thou know anything in favor of this man ? - Y. M. Kat. III, 83b top, v. באר -- Y. Ber.
