b) (orthogr.) a defective writing, omission of the vowel letter, opp. מלא (plene), e. g. חדש, plene חודש. -- Pl. f. חסירות. Erub. 13a; Kidd. 30a ויתרות ח׳ the rules con- cerning defective and plene; a. fr. -- 2) creating a defect. Hag. 3b (ref. to Koh. XII, 11) וכ׳ ח׳ . . . . מה אי you might think, as the nail (driven in) creates a hole and not an addition, וכ׳ חסירין ד״ת אף so do the words of the Law &c.; Yalk. Koh. 989 end וכ׳ מחסרין ד״ת אף.

חף m. (cmp. b. h. חף; חפף I) 1) border, shore. Num. R. s. 13 (ref. to Num. VII, 26) וכ׳ חף אלא כף אין Kaf (bowl) means the same as haf (shore), as it is said (Ps. XcCVIII, 8) rivers strike the Kaf. -- 2) (cmp. חיפא) [rim, ridge,] ward of a loek (פותחת); bit of a key (correspond- ing to the ward); pivot of a door (v. Sm. Ant. s. vv. Cardo, Clavis). Sabb. VIII, 6 חף . . . כדי bone large enough to make of it a haf; expl. ib. 81a פותחת חפי the rims (ward) of a lock; Y. ib. 11b bot סרגיד חף מהו what haf is meant? (Answ.) the key-ward; ib. חף עביד הוא תמן וכ׳ בלוט (not כלום) there (Kel. XIV, 8) he (R. Judah) uses haf in the sense of a key-bit, and here (Sabb. l. c.) in the sense of a key-ward. -- 3) the border of a web, used for starting a new web by fastening the warp to it. Y. b. חפאים, חפאין m. (pl. of חפי; חפה) covering over burnt clay vessels. Tosef. Kel. B. Kam. III, 14; ib. Par. V (IV), 2 וכ׳ ה׳ גילה (לח׳) ed. Zuck. (ed. corrupt) if he removes the covering and finds dust on the vesseis (proving that none had touched them; v. R. S. to Par. V, I for correct version).

XVI, 8 וכ׳ האלה חפוי the wrapping of a lance &c. -- 2) upholstered seat. Ib. XXII, 4 a bridal chair חפויו שנטל whose seat is missing; (Eduy. I, 11 חפויו, Ms. M. דפניו, Mish. Nap. חופיו, v. Rabad a. l.). Kel. l. c. 6 האמצעי חפויו שנטל whose middle cushion (of the three forming the seat) is wanting. -- Pl. as ab. Ib. 5 יוצאין חסויו היו שלא (ed. חפורה, חפי׳ II f. (preced.) products of the earth gained by digging, opp. to tthose gained by cutting; bulbs, roots &c. [Also used in Chald. phraseology.] Tosef. Ned. IV, 3 וכ׳ החפי׳ מן הנודר (Var. הפירי) if one vows ab- stinence from hdfirah, he is forbidden melons &c.; Y. ib. VII, beg. 40b האפייה (corr. acc.). Bekh. 52b שובלי והוה ח׳ (if on the father's death) what was available of the prod- ucts of the ground was classed under k. (vegetable, e. g green of grains), and now it is shuble (ears); B. Bath. 124a (Ms. M. והוו חפורי). Yeb. 63a וח׳ מילחא . . . מאה invest a hundred Zuz in land, and you will have salt and com- mon vegetable.
