חצב ch. 1) same.; interch. with הצד q. v. - Part. pass. הציב, v. חציבא. -- *2) (used of the Cistus) to cut through the ground, to grow. Pes. 111b, v. הצובא II. --- [Lev. R. s. 25 חצובן ח׳, v. חצד I.] thpe. אתהצב to be hewn. Targ. Is. L, 1.

חצב II, חצוב m. (חצב) [cutter,] a shrubby plant, w iith deep and straight roots, used for hedges to mark boundaries, prob. cistus. B. Bath. 55a וכ׳ והח׳ המצר a. landmmark (stone &c.) and the hazab form a legal bound- ary &c. Ib. 56a, v. חצובא I. Tosef. Sabb. XIV (XV), 8; Y. b. חצבא m. ch.=h. חצב. Succ. 29a. Ber. 22a bot. תקן וכ׳ בת ח׳ (Ms. M. חוצבא) ordained that a pitcher contain- ing nine kab must be used for purification. Ib. אתבר וכ׳ חצביה R. חצד I (cmp. חצב) to cut, mow (corresp. to h. קצר). Targ. Deut. XXIV, 19; a. fr. -- M. Kat. 9b תחצד ולא דתזרע that you may sow but not cut (that your children may not die in your life time). Taan. 10a דחצדא בבל עתירה וכ׳ (Ms. M. דחצרא . . . עתידה) Babylonia is rich because she harvests without rain (independent of rain-fall on account of her canalization). Koh. R. to II, 20; Lev. חצובא II m. ch. =חצב II. B. Bath. 56a תיחם שבו ח׳ וכ׳ (Ms. O. חצב, Rashi חצובה) it is the h. which Joshua introduced as landmarks. Bets. 25b וכ׳ מקטע ח׳ (some ed. חצובה) the h. cuts the feet of (convicts) the wicked (who remove the boundary lines). -- Pes. 111bדחצבא בטולא גרמידא חצב דלא (Rashi דחצובא) in the shade of a h that has not cut through (grown) to an arm's length (v. חצובה I h. same, v. חצב II, a. preced. - Pl. חצובות. Y. Peah II, beg. 16d לפיאה מפסיקין ח׳ cistus shrubs (between ttwo fields) form a boundary line with regard to the poor man's corner. Gen. R. s. 31, end.
חצובה II f. (v. חצב) a stand for a pitcher, tripod. - כח׳ in the shape of a tripod, triangulary arranged. B. Mets. 25a מהו כח׳ (Ms. H. כחוצבא) if coins are found lying in a triangle; (Y. ih. II, 8b, sq. מצובה, expl. קרפיפא). B. Bath. 83b (also כחצובא) planted in a triangle. Erub. 85b כח׳ דקיימי (Ms. M. חציבא כי דעבידת, read; חצובא, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note) the three ruins between two build- ings stand in a riangle (so as to make only the central ruin equally near to both dwellings).
