חתירתא (חתירא) ch. same. Lev. R. s. 30; Gen. R. s. 63 (ref. to I1 cnr. XXXIII, 13; Gen. XXV, 21) בערביא עתירתא לח׳ קורין in Arabia they say for hathirta (breach) *thirta; Y. Snh. X, 28c bot. עתרתה לחתרתה. . .; Ruth R. to II, 14, v. preced. -- Pl. חתירן. Y. Maas. Sh. V, 55d bot. בתים ח׳ .. . אתעביד (strike out בתים) three hundred rob. beries by breaking in were committed; Gen. חתית, v. חיתית.
חתך (b. h.) 1) to cut, dissect; to sever. Hull. 33a וכ׳ כזית חותך cuts out flesh of the size of an olive. Ib. 32a וכ׳ דלעת ח׳ if in slaughtering he cut a pumpkin at the same time. Ib. 48b a. e. וכ׳ מכאן חותכה he amputates on one place and the animal survives &c. Bets. 32b חותכה באור he may sever the wick over the light. Y. Meg. IV, 75a חותך the reader cuts one verse into two (reading Gen. I, 5, a. I, 5 as two verses severally); a. fr. --- [Lev. R. s. 10 וכ׳ אביו את לחתוך, v. חתר.) --- Part. pass. חתוך cut into, having the incisions of liombs ccc., outlined. Nidd. 24b ח׳ שאינו גוף a shapeless body (not articulated); ח׳ שאינו דאש a shapeless head (without indications of the nose &c.) IV, 5) יפיו על נחתכין . . . שכל all the government affairs were decided upon his opinion. Pi. חיתך 1) to cut. Hull. IV, 2 אבר אבר מחתך he may cut off limb after limb. Ib. 98b וכ׳ לה מחתך he carves the foreleg and then boils it. -- Part. pass. מחותך piece- meal, limbwise. Y. Nidd. III, 50c מח׳ יצא if the embryo came out by pieces. -- 2) to decide. Snh. 7b חתכהו. . . צדק make the case clear and then decide it. Ber. 61a לשון וכ׳ מחתך the tongue forms the sentencs, the mouth closes (the case, makes it irreversible). -- 3) to dig ore (in lumps). חתך ch. same. Pa. חתיך to cut off. Hull. 11t ליה ח׳ לגמרי he severed it entirely, v. לוף. -- Part. pass. מחתך in pieces. Targ. Y. Lev. VII, 30 (ed. Amst. מחתך, in- corr.). Targ. Y. I Num. XII, 12 מח׳ כד (not מחתיך). Ithpa. אתחתך to be cut, to be decided. Targ. Esth. IV, 5 (v. Meg. 15a, quot. in preced.).
חתך m. (preced.) cut, wound. Tosef. Mikv. VII(VIII), 8 הח׳ מפני on account of the place where the handle is intended to be lopped off (v. Mikv. X, 5). -- Erub. 18a. Hull. 32b ח׳ במקום שחט he slaughtered by setting the knife into the wound (and continued the cut).
חתם (b. h.; cmp. b. h. חתל) 1), to tie up, close, lock. Tanh. B'resh. 1 וכ׳ הים ח׳את he locked the Ocean up, that it might not go forth &c. -2) to seal. Y. Ab. Zar. III, 42a bot. בה שחותם טבעת the ring with which he seals. Ih. בה לחתום אסור you dare not use it for a seal; Tosef. ib. V (VI), 2; a. fr. -- 2) to sign, subscribe (as witness, judge &c.) Gitt. VI, 7 חותמין . . . אחד one writes the document and two sign it as witnesses. Ib, 66b סופר ח׳ if the scribe signed as one of the witnesses. lIb. 67a חתומו ואתם and sign you. Shebi. X, 4 וכ׳ חותמין הדיינים the judges sign under it; a. fr. -- Part. pass. חתום, f. חתומה; pl. התומים, חתומין; חתומות. Yeb. 25b, a. e. וכ׳ הח׳ עדים if witnesses are signed &c ; a. fr. -- 3) to close a benediction (v. חתימה). Pes. X, 6 בגאולה וחותם and he closes with redemption (Blessed be the Loord who redeemed Israel). Ib. היה לא חותם he did not close with a benediction. Ber. I, 4 מקום לחתום שאמרו where the Rabbis ordained to close a be- nediction with Barukh &c.; a. fr. -- Part. pass. as ab.
