יסף (b. h.; cmp. אסף), Hif. הוסיף to heap up, to adl (with על). Snh. XI, 3 וכ׳ דברי על להוסיף thus adding to the words of the Scribes (against Deut. IV, 2). Ib. 88b להו׳ בו ויש when there is a possibility to add. Ib. ה׳ ואם גורע and if he did add, he diminishes (violates the law). Ib. 29a המוסיף, v. גרע I. Tosef. Sabb. VI (VII), 17 והאומר השולחן על הוסיפו (not ואומר) and who (ffrom superstition) says, Add (put one more) to the table; a. fr. -- Yalk. Lev. 559 וכ׳ על מוספני (Sifra Metsora beg. אני מוסיף) I will add to what thou saidst. Nithpa. נתוסף, נית׳, Hithpa. התוסף to be added; to be added to, increase, wax. Mekh. Bo. s. 16; Yalk. Ex. 217 לו נ׳ והשני and the second name was added to the first (without abrogating the first). Ex. R. s. 7, beg. וכ׳ עוד לו נ׳ two additional years (of imprisonment) were given him. Sabb. 152a עליהן מתוספת חכמתן. . . ת״ח Ms. M. (ed. חכמה בהן ניתוספת) when scholars grow old, their wisdom grows with their age; ib. וכ׳ מתוספת טפשותן, v. כפשות.

וסר (b. h.; cmp. אסר) [to tie up; cmp. חוב.] Pi. יסר, ייסר to chastise, chasten, try. Snh. 39a. . . מייסר ביסורין he (the king) punishes the prominent ammong them (the rebellious citizens); וכ׳ מי׳ הקב״ה כך so did the Lord visit Ezekiel in order to wash away the sins of Israel. Ab. Zar. 4a וכ׳ ביסורין איסרם Iwould visit them with af- flictions in thisworld,in order that their arms be strength- ened &c. Ex. יסר ch. same, 1) to tie, put on. Targ. Is. XV, 3 ייסרון וכ׳ ed. Lag. (ed. יסרון; h. text חגרו); a. e. - 2) to bind one's sef, to vow. Targ. Num. XXX, 3, sq. -- Y. Taan. II, 66a top (quot. fr. Meg. Taan. ch. XII) בצלו ייסר (Meg. Taan. . c. יאסר) may vow (a fast) in his prayer; Bab. ib. 12a (v. corr. vers. Ms. M. in Rabb. D. S. a. l. notes); v. אסר. Ithpa. אתייסר to be tried. Cant. R. to II, 16 א׳ ו׳ ר׳ וכ׳ ועבד R. J. was tried and suffered with fever &c.
*יסת (cmp. אסי a. עשה) to do habitually. - Denom. וסת, היסת. Hif. הסית, הסית [b. h., by way of syncope, forms re- sembling Kal of סית, as ייסי==יסיתך, ויסת=ויסת &c.] to cause to do, stir up, instigate. Sot. 35a (expl. אל . . ויהס, Num. XIII, 30) בדברים הסיתן (he quieted them, because) he (apparently) instigated them (against Moses). Hag. 5a וכ׳ וניסת רבו עליו שמסיתין עבד Ms. M. (ed. לו מסיתין שרבו) a slave against whom they incite his master and he (the master) is influenced by the instigation (ed.; a slavewhose master, when they incite him, yields &c.), what help is there for him? -- B. Bath. 16a (ref. to Job II, 3) כביכול וכ׳ שמסיתין כאדם (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l.) like a human being, as it were, that is influenced by instigation. Ib. ומסית דורד Ms. R. (ed. ומתעה) Satan comes down and incites (to sin). Y. Snh. VII, 25d top וכ׳ עצמו יסית he will stir himself up (become bold) and incite others; a. fr. -- Esp. מסית or מסית (with ref. to Deut. XIII, 7, sq.) he who stirs people up to worship idols. Snh. VII, 10. Y. ib. l. c. וכ׳ גבוה בלשון.. .מ׳ the massith speaks in a loud voice, the maddiah (v. נדח) in a low voice; a. fr. - Pl. מסיתים, משיתין. Ab. d'R. N. ch. XVI, end ומדיחין והמ׳ האפיקורסין (ed. Schechter . . . המינין המסורות. .. . המשומדים). Nif. ניסת, ניסית to be stirred up, givc way to in- stigation; to be impassioned. Hag. 5a, vv. supra. B. Bath. 16a, v. supra. Sifre Deut. 89 וכ׳ הנ׳ ביד מצוה he who was to be incited to idolatry must first lay his hand on &c. -- Y. Snh. l. c.; Y. Yeb. יעד, ועד (b. h.; v. עוד) to appoint; denom. מועד. Pi. 1) יעד, יי׳ to designate, esp. to designate a Hebrew handmaid to be a freeman's wife (Ex. XXI, 8, sq.). Kidd. 19a ליעדה צריך he must express to her her designation, i e. יעוד בקדושי by betrothal through designation, v. יעוד. Ib. וכ׳ אדם שמייעד מהו may a man designate (a hand- maid) for his minor son?
