ירד (b. h.) to move about, run; esp. to go down; ל־ י׳ to enter; מ־ י׳ to leave. Tanh. B'huck. 5 (ref. to וירדתי, Jud. XI, 37) להרים עולים . . .ההרים על יורד . . . וכי does one yo down on the mountains, do nott men go up to &c. ; ib. בד אצל וארד הניחני (ed. Bub. 7 ואלך) give me leave that I may go down to the court-house; Yalk. Jud. 67. Men. 109b כך לה י׳ שלא זה מה when this one (Shimei) who was not permitted to enter into it (the office) be- came so jealous, וכ׳ לה היורד how much more so is he who once has entered it (and is to be ousted). b. כל וכ׳ ממנה לירד לי האומר whoever would ask me to resign it (the office), Iwould throw at him &c. -- Taan. 8b ירדו גשמים it rains. IV, 18) because he brought down the Law; וכ׳ השכינה את שה׳ he caused the Divine Presence to come down &c. Y. Ber. IV, 7d top מגדולתו אותו הורידו לא they did not remove him from his position. Sot. 13b (ref. to Gen. XXXIX, 1) שהוכ׳ הוריד אלא הורד א״ות read not 'he was brought down', but 'he did bring down', for he (Jo- seph) was the cause of the removal of the astronomers of Pharaoh from their positions. -- Y. B. Kam. IV, 4b top מנכסיהן הורידן he drove them out of their estates (cmp. Bab. ib. 38a); a v. fr. -- לנכסי ה׳ (v. supra) to appoint as administrator. B. Mets. 38b שבוי ל׳ קרוב מורידין we may appoint a relative (presumptive heir) an administrator of the estate of a captive; a. fr. מוריד־ ולא מעלה לא neither raises nor lowers, i. e. has no efect or influence. ירוד I; (ירור) c. (v. next w.) yarod, a bird of solita- ry habits, mentioned in connection with the ostrich (as in b. h. יענה ובנות תנים). -- Pl. ירודין, ירודות (ירור). Tose. Kil. V, 8 וכ׳ והנעמיות הי׳ (Var. והנעמית הירורין) the y. and the ostrich are considered as birds in every respect (op- posing tae popular belief that the ostrich is a cross-breed between a camel and a bird, v.
