ישע (b. h.; cmp. preced. wds.) [to be strong, to recover.] Hif. הושיע to assist, help, deliver. Sot. 34b (ref. to יהושע, Num. XIII, 17) וכ׳ ך יושי יה Yah save thee from &c. Meg. 14a וכ׳ שיושיע. . עתידה my mother shall bear a son who will deliver Israel; Sot. 11b שמושיע. Midr. Till. to Ps. XVIII, 4 מאויבי כשתושיעני when thou shalt have saved me from my enemies. Snh. 73a, v. מושיע. Ber. IV, 4 וכ׳ הושע help, O Lord &c.; a. fr. -- V. הושענא. Niff. נושע to be saved, released. Midr. ישר (b. h.; cmp. אשר) to be firm, strong, healthy; to be straight, right. כחך יישר or חילך 'may thy strength (health) be firm', a phrase of approval and thanks. Sabb. 87a, a. fr. (play on אשר, Ex. XXXIV, 1) ששברת כ׳ י׳, be thanked for having broken (the tablets). Gen. R. s. 54. (play on וישרנה, ISam. VI, 12) חילכם י׳; a. e. -- יישר (ישר) (sub. כחך) thanks right Ber. 42b; Sabb. 53a; Erub. 32b; a. fr. -- Cmp. אישר. Pi. יישר, יש׳ to straighten, direct, to make firm. Ex. R. s. 1 (ref. to ישר, IChr. II, 18) עצמו את שיי׳ כלב זה that is Caleb who kept himself straight (dil not yield to the rest of the spies). Num. R. s. 8 (ref. to Ps. L, 23 דרך ושם) וכ׳ אורחותיו המיישר he who directs his ways straight. (pays regard to his doings). --Part. pass. מיושר, f מיושרת. Pirke d'lt. El. ch.
