כנא ch. same, 1) base, fixed place, line. - Pl. כנייא. Ber. 57b חז בכנייהו (Ms. M. בב׳) he saw them (in his dream) in the regular places (as planted in the field). כנדא II m. (dial. for כרא, cmp. גונדרא) pitcher, pot. [Pes. 111b, v. כנרא.]-- Pl. כנדי. Pes. 30a כ׳ מזבני sellers of earthen ware. כנה f. (v. כן II) 1) base, stand. Kel. VII, 6 את נותן וכ׳ הכ׳ he places the base of a stove between them; [oth. opin. he puts a ruler between, measuring a straight line.] -- 2) ruler or ruled material. Ib. XII, 8, v. כן II.

כנופיא, כינופיא m. (כנף I) crowd, assembly (cmp. דוחקא). Targ. Y. Num. XXXIII, 25 (transl. מקהלות) כ׳ אתר. -- Sabb. 60b כי׳ איכא there is a large gathering (in syn- agogues &c.). בני, כנה, Pi. כנה, כינה (b. h., v. כן I) 1) to qualify, de- fine; to surname, to nickname; to modify an expression, circumscribbe; to compare. B. Mets. 58b וכ׳ רע שם המכנה he who calls his neighbor by a nickname. Shebu. 36a כנה cir- cumscribe (use the third person as euphemism). Sifre Num. S4, a. fr. הכתוב כי׳ the Bible modifies the expression (to avoid anthropomorphism, e. g. Zech. II, 12 עינו for עיני). Meg.
