כפורת, כפרת f. (b. h.; v. preced.) [cover; in sym- bolical language place of atonement,] 1) cover of the Holy Ark. Sifra Vayikra, N'dabah, Par. 1, ch. II. Men. 27b אל הכ׳ פני up to the very front of the kapporeth, contrad. to לפ׳ מבית the room occupied by the k,, Holy of Holies. Ib. וכ׳ ארון הוו דלא שני מקדש during the Second Temple when ark and cover no longer existed. Yoma 55a; a. e. -- 2) (=הכ׳ בית) the innermost of the emple, the Holy of Holies (הקדש מקדש). Shek. VI, 5; Tosef. ib. כפות m. 1) part.pass. of כפת. - 2) bandage. - Pl. כפותים. Pesik. R. s. 31 וכ׳ חזקים כפותינו our bandages were as strong as iron. -- [כפותין, Tosef. Kel. B. Kam. VII, , v. קבות]
כפותא f. (כפף, cmp. כיפא I, כבויא) ball, excrement. B. Bath. 73b וכ׳ כ׳ אפיק Ar. (ed. כופתא רמא, Ms. H. רמא כפו׳, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 2; Rashi to Snh. 98b רמי כופיתא) it cast a ball of excrement with which it ob- structed the Jordan; Zeb. 113b ככא (Ms. M. קלא, v. Rabb. o D. S. a. l. note). כפי, כפא, כפה (b. h.; v. כפף) 1) to bend over, in- vert, turn upside down. Tam. V, 5 וכ׳ עליהן כופה היה he inverts a large vessel and puts it over them (the coals). Ib. וכ׳ אותה כופין they invert it over &c. Pesik. Ekhah, p. 123a המנורה את סיח כ׳ the ass (of gold, given as a bribe to the judge) has upset the lamp (offered on the other side; whence a proverbial expression for litigants out- bidding each other in bribery); Y. Yoma I, 38c bot.; Lev. R. s. 21; Pesik. Ahaire, p. 177a. -- Esp. המיטה את כ׳ toupset the couch, to place the mattresses on or near the floor, as a sign of mourning, opp. toזקף. M. Kat. l. c. נכפית אינה need not be upturned, v. דרגש; a. fr. -- 2) to be overtaken by a demon, esp. to be epileptic. Lev. R. s. 26 שנכפו... ישראל an Israelite and a priest that were af- flicted &c. -- Pes. 112b נכשה תינוק אותו that child will become epileptic.
