*כשף m. (supposed to mean) wild plum-tree. Sabb. 23a וכ׳ כ׳ שרף Ms. M. a. Ar.; copyist's correction in Ms. M. כטף; ed. קטף) resin of the plum-tree is the best for making ink.
כשפא m. design, embroidery, v. כושפא.
כשפן m., pl. כשפנין, v. כש.
כשפנית f. (כשף) engaged in, inclined to sorcery. Pl. כשפניות. Y. Soh. VII, 25d top (ref. to Ex. XXII, 17) (the text speaks only of females) כ׳ הנשים שרוב מפני because most women are inclined to sorcery (Bab. ib. 67a מצויות בכשפים, v. כשף). Yoma 83b כ׳ נשים women engaged in sorcery. Pes. 110a, v. דשתייהי.
כשר I (b. h.; cmp. גשר) [to be well-joined, (cmp. יפה, אריך II),] to be proper, fit, right; to turn out well, to sue- ceed. Y. Hall. I, 57b top וכ׳ לשאר שכשרו החטים wheats which are fit for all other meat offerings; ib. 57c; Sifra. Vayikra, N'dabah, ch. XIV, Par. 13; a. fr. -- V. כשר II. Hif הכשיר 1) (ritual, v. כשר II) to pronounce kasher, to permit. Hull. III, 2 מכשיר . . ר׳ R. pronounces it fit to be eaten, opp. פוסל; a. v. fr. -- 2) to make fit, to prepare. Ab. VI, 1 וכ׳ להיות מכשרתו enables him to be righteous &c. Hull. 140a מכשיר an offering which makes fit for admission to the Temple or eating sacred food, contrad. to מכפר an offering which procures atonement; Kidd. 57a, a. e. -- Snh. 42b ומכפר מכשיר . . . הוצא tthe carrying outside of the camp' (Lev. IV, 12; 21) makes the act legal and pro- cures atonement; ib. ליה עדיף ממכשיר מכשיר the analogy between one fitting act and another is preferred. -- B. XXIX, 22. Targ. Y. Lev. XI, 2; a. fr. -- Gitt. 87a וכ׳ האי ליתכשר let the one deed be declared valid throngh the signature 'Reuben ben' &c. -- Hull. 36b וכ׳ במשקי איתכ׳ it was made fit for unclean- ness through the fuids &c.; ib. הקדש בחבת אתכ׳, v. חבה; a. e. Mets. 89b top וכ׳ גברא לאכשורי as to mak- ing the man fitter, i. e. as to the laborer in fruits being permitted to use means for increasing his appetite, there is no question, opp.to פירא לאכשורי using means for making the fruits more appetizing. -- Zeb. 25a מכשר אכשורי בשמאל he (R.S.) declares it permissible to use the left hand (for קמיצה). כשר II m. (b. h.; preced.) 1) fit, esp. kasher, ritually permitted, legal, opp. פסול, טרפה. Pem. כשרה, כשירה. Hull. I 4 במליקה פסול בשחיטה כ׳ what is legal in slaught- ering (cutting the throat) is illegal in pinching (the neck). Ib. כ׳ שחיטתו his act of slaughtering has been properly executed. Kidd. IV, 6 לכהונה כ׳ בתו his daughter is fit to marry a priest. Gitt. IX, 4 כ׳ הולד the issue is legitimate, is under no religious or civil disabilities; a. v. fr. -- Pl. כשרים, כשרין, כשי׳; . כשרות, כשי׳. Hull.III, 2בבהמה כ׳ אלו the following defects in a domestic animal are kasher, i. e. do not make the animals unfit for eating. Ib. 3 אם כ׳ אדומים if they (the entrails) are red (have their na- tural color) they are (the animal is) kasher; a. v. fr. -- 2) worthy, honest, of noble conduct. Ber.
