למלם, לימ׳ (ranspos. of מלמל, v. מלל; cmp. געגע) to talk against, murmur, sneer. Pesik. R. s. 6 לי׳ לא עיד וכ׳ אדם no longer did any one ttalk behind Moses. Ib. מלמלמין (not מלמלאין); Yalk. Kings 184; (Ex. R. s. 52 מליצים). Koh. R. to VIII, 8 וכ׳ בפיהם ממלמלין (fr. מלמל); Lam. R. introd. (R. Han. 1) ממללים sneering with their mouths; v. סרז.

למס (v. מס II) unto tribute, tributary (used homiletic- ally as an independent word). Lam. R. to I, 1 שרתי (ref. to למם היתה, ib.) למס היתה לפיכך ע׳ז ישראל שעבדו לפי סמל היא למס היא because the Israelites worshipped idols (סמל), therefore she (Jerusalem) became tributary, the letters of סמל and למס being the same; ib. [read ] הפכה סמל דלמס the inversion of למס is סמל. Ib. הוא סיני הוא וכ׳ ל׳ the numerical value of סיני (130) is the same as that of למס. Ib. דלבא למסא אמרי ורבנן (v. מס I) but the Rabbis explain lamas, unto melting of the heart (she be- came faint); v. מא I.
*למס (מסס) unto him who refuses (used homiletic- ally as an independent word, meaning in Greek) dog. Sabb. 63b (ref. to Job VI, 14, v. Targ. a. .) ׳ לכלב קירין בל״י שששכן for in Greek they call a dog lms (?). [The sentence is an interpolated gloss, v. Y. B. Kam. VII, end, 6a; Keth. 96c; Gen. R. s. 76, end. The interpolator may have had in mind hoapao a plague', used as adj. in LXX for בליעל.]

לסוטה (snb. בג, חלוק) m. (orig. = לסוטה, used as an independent w. as if from a root לסט, cmp. למס) the thin web torn by loose women (ע החון יוצאת של חלוק, Kel. XXVIII, 9, v. חון II); in gen. flne veil. Y. Sabb. VI, 8b bot. (expl. רדידים, Is. III, 23) וכ׳ דתימר כמה ל׳ it is the dress of the ill-reputed, as we read (Cant. VV, 7) they took my veil &c. (believing her tto be a harlot). Ib. XIII, beg., 14a וההן וכ׳ בסוף אפי׳ ל׳ (not לסיה) as regards the thin web, even the finishing (adding the fringe) is considered an act of weaving (in the Sabbath law). Y. M. Kat. II, 81b top הורוון וכ׳ ל׳ בהדין decided concerning (the sale of) stuff for veils (during the festive week) &c. -- Pl. לסוטות. Y. Sabb. IV, 7a top, v. חף. - Chald. form; לסוטייא. Y. B. Mets. (לסטם,) לסטס, (donom. of ליסטיס) to attack, as a free-booter, to commiit robbery. EEx. R. s. , beg. מלסטס היה הבריות את attacked and robbed the people. Snh. 72a יוצא וכ׳ ומלסטם דרכים לפרשת he will go out to the cross-roads and rob &c.; Yalk. Deut. 930.

לעב, Hif. הלעיב (b. h.; cmp. לעג) to mock, talk las- civiously (with ב). --- Y. Sot. III, 19a בדברי ומלעבת יושבת וכ׳ who sits down and quotes Biblical phrases in a las- civious manner (e. g. Gen. XXX, 16).

XXX, 17) וכ׳ על שהלעיגה עין the eye ttthat mocked at the law commandiing to honor father and mother and despised the law (Deut. XXII, 6) &c. Erub. 21b (ref. to להג, Koh. XII, 12) וכ׳ על המלעיג כל whosoever derides the words of the wise, v. לעג. Gen. R. s. 94 בשפתותיהן מלעיגים spoke lasciviously. Esth. R. to III, 9 וכ׳ אותנו מלעיגין they deride us and our religion.
