מחיקה f. (מחק) 1) rubbing, blotting out. Erub. 13b היא ׳y דדדה עשייה its preparation consists in washing (the writing) off (Num. V, 23). Y. Sot. II, 18a bot. ניתנה למ׳ is intended to be blotted out. Bab. ib. I8a; a. e. -- 2) scrap- ing. Y. Sabb. VII, 10c bot. וכ׳ היתה מ׳ מאי what scraping was done in the preparation of the Tabernacle?

מחל (cmp. מחה) [to blot out, annul,] to remit (a. debt); to foigive, pardon, to forego, renounce. Keth. 85b מחול ומחלו וחזר . . המוכר if one sells a note of indebted- ness to a neighbor, and then remits the debt, it stands remitted (and the buyer of the note must settle with the creditor). Ib. מחלתו she remitted it. Y. B. Mets. VI, end,, 11a מוכסין להס שמחלו to whom custom offficers remitted the fine. Ib. מחלנו פלוני לשם we remitted (the fine) for this man's sake (individually). Ber. 12b כל על לו מוחלין וכ׳ all his sins are forgiven to him. Ib. 32a עד . אאיני וכ׳ להם ותסלח שתמחול I will not leave thee until thou forgivest and pardonest &c. - Sabb. 30a וכ׳ על לי מחול for- give me that particular sin (the seduction of Bathsheba); לן מחול tthou art forgiven; a. v. fr. w=כבודו על מ׳ to forego the honor due to one's self. R. s. 19 וכ׳ נעשה המוחל שאין for he who is asked to forgive, must not be relentless (v. B. Kam. VIII, 7). Nif. נמחל to be cancelled; to be forgiven, pardoned. B. Mets. 17a; Gitt. 26b, a. e. שעבודו ׳ שכבר . . . ששטר on a. note once given and paid off you cannot raise a oan again, because the security which it contains (v. אחריות) has once been cancelled. Yoma 88a לימחל סדורין (his sins) lie ready to be forgiven. Taan. 7b וכ׳ נמחלו אא״כ unless Israel's sins are forgiven. B. Kam. VIII, 7 נותן שהוא אע״פ וכ׳ לו נ׳ אין although he pays (the fine for insulting a. neighbor), he is not forgiven (by the Lord), until he asks pardon; a. fr. -V. מחילה.

מחלה, מחילה f. (b. h.; חלל) cavily, cave. Mekh. B'shall., Amal., s. 2 let me enter the land קסריון במחילת by the cave Caesarion (Sifre Num. 135 חלל דרך). Tosef. Yeb.
