מ״ם, מם hMem, name of the thirteenth letter of the alphabet. Sabb. 103b סתומה דשם מ״ם Ms. O. (ed. סתום) the Mem in shem is closed (final letter); פתוחה שמעון מ״ם (ed. פתוח) the Mem in Shimon is open (initial letter). Ib. 104a וכ׳ מאמר סתומה מ״ם פתוחה מ״ם the open and the closed AMems intimate that there are subjects in the Law which are open to all, and such as are closed (esoteric studies). Y. Meg. I, 71d וכ׳ מ״ם מ״ם דכתיב דין מהו why is it that the letters Hem, Nun &c. are written in two ways -- Maas. Sh. IV, 11; a. fr. -- Pl. ממין, מימין. ממון m. (contr. of מהמון, v. המון; המה) accumulation, wealth, value (in Greek writers; AMamomaon). Tanh. Matt. 7 וכ׳ ממונכם את חיבבתם אתם you loved your wealth (of cat- tle) more than your souls; Num. R. s. 12. Ib.; Tanh. l. c. 6 כלום אינו מונה שאתה מה ממון money is named mamon, that which thou countest is nothing. B. Mets. 2b, a. fr. בספק המוטל מ׳ property of doubtful ownership (with several claimants). Tosef. B. Mets. VII, 13; B. Kam. 116b מ׳ לפי מחשבין the loss of a caravan attacked by robbers (the redemption paid them) is apportioned according to the value of the freight which each passenger carried, contrad. to נפשות לפי according to the number of pas- sengers.
