מסמר m. (b. h. only in pl.; סמר) 1) a pointed ohfect, nail, pin. Sabb. VI, 10 (67a) הצלוב מן מ׳ (Y. ed. הצלוב מ׳) a nail from the gallows of an impaled convict (used as an amulet). Kel. XII, 4 הגרע מ׳ the blood letter's pin (v. infra); השעות אבן מ׳של the style of tthe sun-dial; הגרדי מ׳ the weaver's pin. Ib. 5 וכ׳ שהתקינו מ׳; Tosef. ib. B. Mets. II, 14 וכ׳ שעקמו מ׳ an iron pin which was bent in order to be used as a key. Kel. l. c. שלחני של מ׳ the banker's pin for fastening the shutters, v. תריס. - Num. R. s. 14 שיש מ׳ שושנה לו a nail which has a big knob. -- Tosef. Kel. B. Mets. מסננא m. (סנן) pure gold. Targ. Is. XIII, 12 (ed. Vil. מסנא; ed. Lag. מסננה; h. text כתם).
מסננת f. (סנן) strainer; the strained mass. Sabb. XX, 2 (139b) חרדל של מ׳ a mustard mixture in the strainer (v. Rashi a. l.). Ib. 134a שלו במ׳ . . מסננין אין you must not strain a mustard mixture (on the Holy Day) in the strainer designated for it.
מסנתא f. (preced.) sieve, basket. Y. Dem. II, 21a bot. Ib. מסאנא (corr. acc.).
מסס (b. h.) to melt, dissolve. Nif. גמס, גמס, נימוס, נימס to melt, be liguefed; to fall away; to faintt; to despair. EEx. R. s. 25 נימוין (Var. נימסין) they faint. Yalk. ib. 251 נמסין התחילו they began to lose heart; Mekh. B'shall., Shir., s. 9 להמס. Deut. R. s. 1, end וכ׳ עינו תיבם may this man's (thy) eye run out. Maasr. I, 2 משימפו הרמונים pomegranates are subject to tithes when their core becomes pulpy; expl. Y. ib. 48a bot. וכ׳ אוכל משיתמעך (cmp. מססמס II) when the eatable portion (core) can be mashed under one's fingers;[anoth. definition taking our w. in the sense of falling away, diminution; מחצה משיכניסו when the ripening core is reduced to half the capacity of the cavity, --upon which the remark is made, לבבנו פלגון . . . הממסו דילמא perhaps he learned it from the homiletical teachers who interpret hemassu &c.
