מר II m. (b. h.; מרר) 1) bitter. Pes. 39a וכ׳ מר ירק כל every bitter herb contains a gumm (won by impissation). Lev. R. s. 31 וכ׳ ידו מתחת מזה מר rather something bitterer than this out of the hand of the Lord, than sweets out of thine; Yalk. Gen. 59; Gen. R. s. 33 (corr. acc.);a.fr. -- Y. Snh. X, 27a לי מר woe is me. Keth. 69b (play on וסר סיוחים מח, Am. VI, 7) לסרוחים שר נעשה וזח מר he who is bitter (of soul) and distracted (through bereavement) is made the chief of those banqueting (i. e. the mourner must sit at the head at the comforting meal); M. Kat. 28b (not מרזח, Ms. M. מרוזח); Yalk. Am. 545. -2) corrosive substance; trmnsf. care, worry. Sabb. 30b; Pes. 117a (play on מור, Cant. V, 13) a student before his teacher, מר נוטפות שפתותיו ואין whose lips to not drip from care; (Cant. R. l. c. ששפתיו מור נוטפות). - 3) mar, name of a bitter herb, ferula. Pes. l. c. ירואר מר, expl. הואי׳ זה מר mar is 'roar, v. ירואר; [or. Var. lect. v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note. -- bem. מרה, q. v.
מר III (or מר) m. (מור) exchange; דר במר instead of; as. Hull. 94a דשחוטה במר ניהליה ויהבה and he gave her (the ritually forbidden hen) to him (the gentile) pretend- ing that it was ritually cut. B. Kam. 113b, v. פליזא. Bekh. 30aa דכנתא במר ליה מזבין sold it for fat of the ileum (which is permitted; Ar. סרכנתא, suggesting דפפנא, q. V.).
מר IV, מר (h. a. ch.). מרא I m. (pl forms מרא, מר. מארי) (Arab. marua, cmp. מררא, to be strong; cmp. בר a. גבר) man, lord, master; somebody; (as a title) Mar. Tosef. Shek. II, 15 הכל על שמר מפני because he was ruler &c., v. אמרכול; Hor. 13a כולא אמר (prob. to be read מרא כולא). - Lev. R. s. 31 נח מרי my ord Noah. Y. Peah VIII, end, 21b עלי מרי יכעוס לא let my lord not be angry &c.; a. e. -- Targ. Gen. XXXVII, 19. Targ. Prov. VIII, 45c מ׳ והא שמועתא מרי הא עובדא here is a master of traditions and a master of prac- tice. Gen. R. s. 58 (expl. תוששב, Gen. XXIII, 4) ביתא מארי (gהבית בעל) owner of a house, citisen, opp. דיירא. Succ. 32b, a. fr. לי מריה ליה שרי the Lord forgive him (he is mistaken). -- Ned. 50a עליה מרנא יעביד let our lord do with this (be contented for the present). Y. Ab. Zar. V, 44d [read] דנפשך מרה את אין (cmp. Prov. XXIII, 2) iff thou art master over thy desire; מיתך נפשך אי if thy desire is master over tthee; Deut. מר, מרא II f. 1) (=מארא, v. ארה) hoe, rake. Erub. 77b וחצינא מ׳ דבעי it requires hoe or pick-axe (to get it. out). Meg. 28a, v. דרי II. Taan. 23b top ומ׳ ציבי the wood (he had collected) and the rake. B. Mets. 82b ופסל מ׳ וקרדום (Ms. מר, Ar. פסל מר) hoe and mattock and axe; Ber. 57b וקרדום פסל מר. Keth. 64a לקבורה ומרה . . . בעינא I want a staff to lean on and a hoe to make my grave, i. e. a son to support me in old age and to provide for my burial; Yeb. 65b. Taan. 21b, v. זבילא; a. e. -a*2) (= מארא, denom. of אורא; cmp. Arab. marvu silices &c.) flint for striking a light. Zeb. 116b חדתא ממ׳ נורא אפיקו (Ms. M. ממגאנא, Yalk. I, 2 ראשון מ׳ the first inspection of a leprous affection (Lev. XIII, 3), שני מ׳ the second (ib. 5) &c. Ib. 4 לבן מ׳ כל all shades of white; סיבות מ׳ grey color.
