נביאות f (denom. ofנביא) prophecy, prophetic mission. Meg. 15a וכ׳ בנ׳ . . . שששמו (מקום) כל (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note) wherever the name of a person and that of his father are mentioned in connection with prophecy, it is sure that he was a prophet and the son of a prophet. Snh. 39b לנ׳ עובדיהו זכה מה מפני for what merit was Obadiah granted the gift of prophecy - Bekh. 45a כדברי דבריהם עשו ׳ they made their verdicts like those of propbecy, . e.. they gave no reasons for their opinions. נבייה, נביה f. (נבא) sproutings, leaves and fowers. Ab. Zar. III, 8 (48b) וכ׳ עליהן נושרת שהנ׳ מפני Y. a. Bab. ed. (Mish. הנמייה, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 6) because the foliage of the Asherah drops on them &c., v. זבל. Ib. 48b וכ׳ בנ׳ שמשביח מה the benefit conferred upon a plant by its foliage, is neutralized by the disadvantage of the shade. Mel. III, 8 ( 4a) בנ׳ ולא בשיפויי לא Rashi (Bab. ed. נבייא; Mish. נויה) neither by using the shavings nor by using the sproutings (twigs &c. of the dedicated tree); Tem. 31b ו׳ שפויי Rashi (ed. ניבא); Tosef. XL, 7) ו׳ . .. חצירו יבש וכ׳ ציצו Abimelech's grass is dried up and his flower has faded, but &c.; a. e. -- V. נובלת. Pi. נבל 1) to cause fading; to ruin, deface; to disgrace. Y. Shebi.
