נהוונד pr. n. pl. Nahiwand, a Median town south of Ecbatana (v. Neub. Geogr. p. 3l, a. Sm. Dict. Geogr. II, 495a s. v. Orontes). Kidd. 72a the cities of Maday' (II Kings XVIII, 12) וכ׳ וחברותיה נ׳ זו that means N. and her neighbors; .. . the forts of the Moschi &c.; Yeb. 17a ניהר (corr. acc.). נהירא pr. n. m. N'hira (Light), allegorical name of the Messiah. Lam. R. to I, 16 (ref. o Dan. II, 22).
נהל (b. h.), Pi. ניהל to quiet, support, lead (v. Del. Proleg., p. 17 sq.). Num. R. s. 12 (interpret. Ex. XV, 13) וכ׳ התורה בזכות ניהלם he supported them for the sake of the Law which they accepted, until the sanctuary was erected.
נהל (Syr. חל, P. Sm. 2336; cmp. נהי I) to shake, sift (cmp. Am. IX, 9). Bets. 29b כ׳m נהלא . דביתהו tthe wife of R. J. sifted flour (on the Holy Day) on the back of &c., v. מהולתא I; a. e. - Part. pass. נהיל, נהילא. Hull. 51b. נ׳ קטמא sifted ashes (which bake and harden when piled up). Ber. 6a.
