נעיץ m. (נעץ) a wedge-like ditch. - Pl. עיצים, נעיצין. B. Kam. V, 5 (50b). Mikv. V, 6; a. e.
נעל (b. h.) 1) to tie (the door), to lock up, close. B. Kam. VI, 1 כראוי בפניה ׳ if he locked it in (secured the fockk) properly. Tosef. B. Bath. II, 11, a. e. וכ׳ וגדר נ׳ if he fastened (something on the property), fenced in or tore down, it is possession (הקה). Sabb. XIII, 6 אחד ו׳ בפניו and one blocked it (by placing himself in the entrance). Ib. 7 וכ׳ ביתו את לנועל it is like one lock- ing up (sitting at the entrance of) his house to guard it. Mekh. Mishp. s. 18 וכ׳ בפני לנעול שלא in order not to close the door to future proselytes (not to discourage them on account of advanced age). Snh. 32a, a. fr. שלא כדי וכ׳ תנעול, v. דלת. -- Y. Naz. Midr. Till. to Ps. IV וכ׳ ׳ . .. תפלה שערי the gates of prayer are sometimes open, sometimes closed, but the gates of tears are never closed; a. e. -- 2) to tie a sandal, to put shoes on. Tosef. Sabb. IV (V), 8 ינעול לא וכ׳ אדם one must not put on a nail-studded sandal &c. Y. M. Kat. III, 83c ביום בו לנעול . הורי R. .. allowed (the people mourning for R. Yassa) to wear shoes on the same day. Tosef. Kidd. I, 5 וכ׳ סנדלו לו נ׳ if the slave tied his sandals for him (the new master) or untied them, it is possession (v. supra); B. Bath. 53b (Ms. M. הנעיל); a. fr. - Part. pass. as ab., shod. Yalk. Josh. 7 ׳ אתה במנעלים וכי וכ׳ dost thou wear shoes and observest not mourning? Hif. הנעיל to putt shoes on a person. B. Bath. l. c.; Kidd. 22b וכ׳ הנעילו הלבישו if the slave helped him put. on his clothes or his shoes or lifted him up (helped him into a conveyance), it is possession. Nif. ננעל to be closed. Ber. 32b וכ׳ שערי ננעלו .. מיום since the day the Temple was destroyed, the gates of prayer have been closed. Ib. ננעלו לא דמעה שערי; Midr. Till. to Ps. IV ננעלים, v. supra. B. Mets. 59a השערים כל וכ׳ חוץ ננעלים all gates (of prayer) are (at times) closed, except the gates for the cry of oppression. Ib. הפרגוד ננעל, v. פרגוד. נעל ch. same, to tie a shoe. Part. pass. נעיל, נעיל. Targ. Y. Ieut. XXV, 9 וכ׳ ׳ ויהא and there shall be tied on the foot . . . a sandal which &c. Af. אנעיל to provide wwith shoes. Targ. II Chr. XXVIII, 15. [Dan. II, 25, a. e. הנעל to bring up, fr. עלל]
נעל m. (b. h.; preced.) 1) (cmp. Gr. ~~~~~~~) [tied under the foot,] shoe. Yeb. 102a מנעלו ולא נעלו . . . התורה the Law (Deut. XXV, 9) says, what is tied to his.ffoot, but. not what covershis foot (a full shoe, v. מנעול). Sifre Deut. 291 (ref. to Deut. l. c.) שלו נעלו his own shoe; a. e. -- 2) lock, locking up. -- Pl. נעלים. Cant. R. to VII, 2, v. כעילה.

נעם (b. h.) to be pleasing, lovely. Hif. הנעים 1) same. Snh. 24a (ref. to נעם Zech. XI, 7) וכ׳ לזה זה שמנעימים . . אלו this refers to the scholars in Palestine who are polite to one another in discussion, opp. מחבלים. -- 2) to siweeten the voice; to sing, accomapany. Y. Shek. V, 48d bot. וכ׳ קולו את מנעים היה he sweetened his voice when singing, v. נעימה. Gen. R. s. 23 שהיתה וכ׳ בתוף מנעמת she sang to the timbrel in honor of idolatry, v. נעמה. Cant. R. to IV, 4וכ׳ זמירותיהם מנעים מי who sweetens Israel's songs? David &c.; a. e.
נעמא, v. נעמיתא.
נעמה (b. h.) pr. n. f. Naamah, 1) sister of Tubal Cain. Gen. R. s. 23 (ref. to Gen. IV, 22) נ׳ אותה קורין היו למה וככ why was she (the wife of Noah) called N. ? Because her doings were pleasing; ib.וכ היתה אחרת ׳ TubalcCain's sister was a difterent Naamah, and she was so named &c., v. נעם Hif.; Yalk. ib. 38. -- 2) N., the Ammonite, mother of King Rehoboam. נעמית f. (נעם; v. Fl. to Levy Targ. Dict. II, p. 569 sn.) ostrich. Kel. XVII, 14 המצופה ׳ ביצת the glazed shell of an ostrich egg Tosef. ib., B. Mets. VII, 6. Y. Sabb. I, 3 ׳ ביצת זו היענה בת את the child of a y nah' (Lev. XI, 16), tthis intimates that the egg of an ostrich (and of all other unclean birds) is forbidden; a. e. - Pl, נעמיות. Tosef. Sabb.
