נפיל m., פילא I f. ch. same, 1) giant. Ruth R. to II,1 לנ׳ ׳ נסיב when a giant marries a giantess. - 2) Grion. -- Pl. נפילין, v. ניפלא I.
גפיל, פילא I (נפלא) m.=h. פל, untinely birth, ot viable. Targ. Y. ILev. XXII, 27 נפיל דלא (ed. Vien. גפיל, ed. Amst. נפיל) that it is not an untimely birth. Targ. Ps. LVIII, 9 Ms. (ed. נפולא). Targ. Job III, 16 נפלא (Bxt. נפלא; Ms.נפלא). - Pl. נפלי, ני׳. B. Bath. 101b בד׳ (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 30, ed. בנ׳) it means a lot set aside for burying untimely births. Ib. 102b וכ׳ ב׳ הרתי we do not presume two lots to be set aside for &c.
נפילה f. (נפל) 1) falling. Sot. VIII, 6, a.e. v. ניסה. B. Kam. V, 7 (54b) הבור לנפילת as to the laws relating to an animal falling into a pit (EEx. XXI, 33 sq.). Y. Ber. I, 3c top מנפילתנו שתסמכנו that thou mayest support us in our downfall. -- Pl. נפילות. Yalk. Esth. 1058 (ref. to Esth. VI, 13) למה הללו ׳ שתי why this double use of nafalh- 2) (v. מפולת) quantity of seed reguired for a fcld. Peah V, 1 ׳ כדי (ב) לעניים נותן (Y. ed. נפלה לעניים) he must give to the poor as much as the field requires for seed (v. Maim. a. .; oth. opin.; as miuchh as is geherally dropped at cutting); B. Mets. 105b. Ib. IX, 5 נ׳ כדי בה יש אם (Y. ed. ניפלה) if the field yields as much as is required for seed, expl. Y. ib. 12a בה הנופל הזרע כדי; Y. Peah. V, 18d ניפלת כדי (corr. acc.). --[Y. Orl. נפיצה f. (נפץ) shattering. Y. Orl. I, 60d bot. [read;] נ׳ היא שבירה היא הקמה היא עשייה היא (some ed. נתיצה) making an idol is the same as putting uup, breaking the same as shattering (v. Y. Ab. Zar. IV, 44a).

נפיש (interch. with פוש a. פשי, q. v.) 1) [to be blown up,] to be large; to increase. Targ. Ex. I, 7; a. e. Imper. פוש. Targ. Gen. I, 28; a. e. - *2) [to be blown away,] to be gone. B. Bath. 121a; Ned. 78a ׳ . . לנהרדעא אתא Ar. (ed. אשכחיה ולא) he came to N. to see R. S.; he was gone. Af. אפיש (interch. with אפיש, a. אפשי) to extend, en- large. Targ. Gen. XLVIII, 4 (some ed. מפשי׳). Targ. Y. Num. XIX, 6 אפושי; a. fr. -- Men. 23b וכ׳ טפי תבלין לה דא׳ when he made the quantity of spices larger than &c. Bets. 7a מפששינן לא . . אפושי (or מפשי׳ .. אפושי) we must not extend the range of unclean things by rabbinical enactments. Sot. 26a ליסש לא .. אפושי we ought not to increase the number of illegitimate births (by allowing intermarriage between bastards). B. נפך, נו׳ m. (b. h.) name of a jewel in the high priests breast plate, emerald. Ex. R. s. 38, end וכ׳ בתוב היה ׳ על on the nofekh the name of Judah was engraven.
נפל (b. h.) to fall, lie down; to be dropped; to occur. Sabb. XVI, 2 דליקה נפלה if a confagration takes place. Pes. II, 3, v. מפולת. Y. Sot. VII, 21b top (ref. to יקים, Deut. XXVII, 26) נופלת תורה יש וכי is there a fallling aw (to need erection)? Ned. 65b וכ׳ לידי נופל אינו הנופל כל he who falls (becomes poor) does not immediately fall into the hands of (become dependent on) the charities (but his friends support him for a time). B. Kam. IX, 11, a. fr. לנדבה דמיו יפלו its equivalent mmust be suurrendered as a donation to the Temple. B. Bath.
