(ref. to Ex. XII, 22) אסקופה אלא סף ואין . . . הכתוב מגיד the text intimates that he loosens and digs a hole on the side of the threshold and laughters over it, for saf means (a cwvity made in) the tthreshold. Ib. כלי אלא סף אין saf means a vessel; Y. Pes. IX, 36a bot., sq. - ) pl. ספים, ספין, סי׳ [cut stones, cmp. גזדת,] paving-blocks, stone-pavement. Midr. Till. to Ps. LXXVIII, 45 וכ נבקעין והס׳ and the blocks burst before them (the frogs). Ib. to Ps. CV, 30 הס׳ בתי houses which had stone pavements; (Yalk. ib. 820 פספסין; Ex. R. s. 10 פסיפס).

ספג (denom. of ספוג) 1) to swallow, absorb. Cant. R. to VII, 3 וכ׳ סופגין .. סופגת זו חטה מה as the wheat (four) absorbs (water), so Israel absorbs &c. Ab. V, 15, v. ספוג; a. e. - Trnsf. (cmp. לקה, בלע) to receive loshes, be punished. Tem. I, 1, a. fr. הארבעים את סופג receives forty (thirty-nine) lashes. Naz. IV, 3 וכ׳ תסוג . . סופגת אינה אאם if she cannot receive the Biblical punishment, let her receive the punishment for rebellion; a. fr. -- 2) to use a ספוג, to wipe, dry. Sabb. XXII, 1 יספוג לא (Ar. יספג Pi.) he must not put down a sponge (to absorb the spilt wine). Zeb. VI, 5 במלח ספגו he dried the dripping head of the sacrifice by rubbing salt on it. Tosef. ib. ספד (b. h.) [to strike, beat; cmp. Lat. plango,] to la- ment, mourn. Gitt. 57a לזה סופדח mourn for this man. Snh. 47a, a. e. וכ׳ תסדוני אל do not hold services for me in the towns; a. fr. Hif. הסספיד to arrange funeral or memorial services for; to lament, eulogise. M. Kat. I, 5 וכ׳ קידם יספייו דלא and must not engage a safdan (eulogist) for him thirty days before a festival. Meg. 28b וכ׳ בהן מספידין אין no funeral services for an individual must be held in them (the synagogues); רבים . . ומספידין but you may use them for funeral services in cases of public mourning (for a. distinguished person). Treat. S'mah. III, 4לעניים מספידין וכ׳ mourning services are held for children of poor men at the age of three, for those of rich men at the age of four years. M. Kat. 21b גדול הספד והספידום and they ar- ranged a great lamentation over them (the sons of R. aAAkiba); a. fr. Nif. נספד to be mourned for, be eulogised. ספדא m. (preced.) mourner, wailer. - Pl. ספדיא. Targ. Koh. XII, 5 (some ed. סומדיא). Targ. Y. Lev. XIII, 45 ועל מהלע יהוי ס׳ (not ספריא) and he shall go around to the wailers (v. M. Kat. 5a).

ספדן m. (preced. wds.) hired mourner, speaker at fu- nerals or memmorial services. M. Kat. 8a וכ׳ ס׳ בא a wailer came and placed himself at the door (offfering his services). --- Pl. ספדנים, סדנין. Ber. 62a וכ׳ הס׳ מן. . . כששם as the dead are called to account (for their deeds), so the wailers and those who respond after them will be made responsible (for their eulogies).
