ספן ch. same, 1) to brighten, scour; v. thpe. - 2) to regard. Targ. II Esth. I, 12. Ib. VII, 9 (10). -- 3) to look out for, provide, store; (of a bird's ovary) to be fructified. Bets. 7a מארעא דספנא ביעי eggs laid by a hen that was fecundated by friction in the dust, v. דכרא. Hull. 58a מארעא בדספנא if the hen was fructified by frictio &c. Ithpe. אסתפן 1) to be brightened, scoured. Targ. Y. Lev. VI, 21 (cmp. Tosef. Nidd. VIII, 11 הצפינן, quot. s. v. צפוון I). -- 2) to be provided, laid in. Koh. R. to XI, 9 [read;] עד דאיסתפנוןפריטויntil the money which he owes is hatched (brought together); (Pesik. Shub., p. 164b מתפשר, v. פשר).

IV, 14 וכ רובן הסמ sailors are mostly pious men. Y. M. Kat. III, 82b bot. וכ׳ וסניו איכריו (not איבריו) his farm-hands, and the sailors and camel drivers in his employment.

ספסופא, ספסופה m. (=אספס׳; אסף)riotous gath- ering, or indiscriminate capture of people during a riot. Y. Ter. VIII, 46b bot. בס׳ איתציד was caught in a riot.

ספסירא c. (ספר, cmp. ~~~ג~~~ Jos. Ant. XX, 2, 2) sword. Targ. Prov. XII, 18. Targ. Esth. VIII, 15; a. e. -- B. Bath. 21b למיקטליה ס׳ שקל he took up a sword to kil him. Y. Ter. VIII, 46b bot. ספסר חד טעין carrying a sword; וכ׳ ס׳ בהדא with this sword did Bar N. kill his brother. ספסירא m.=h.ספסר, accountant, middleman, broker. B. Mets. 42b וכ׳ דזבין ס׳ a middleman who buys here and sells there (immediately). Ib. 63b לס׳ זוזי למיתב בעי והא but would he not have had to pay the broker?, i. e. has he not the advantage of saving the broker's fee?
ספסירותא f. (preced.) brokers work, agency. B. Mets. 63b ספסירותיה... וזי a man's money does the bro- kerage for him, i. e. dealers come to the capitalist directlys.
ספסל m. (v. מפל 2) frame, bench, stool. Kidd. 70a ס׳ וכ׳ רבנן דאמור call it safsal (Hebrew) as the scholars do, or &c. (v. איסטבא 2). Kel. XXII, 3 וכ׳ שניטל ס׳ a bench (long board) which has lost one of its ends (supports). Tosef. ib. B. Bath. I, 12 שנתפרק ס׳ a frame which has falllen apart. Mikv.V, 2; a. fr. -- Pl. ספסלים, ספמשלין. Y. Ber. IV, 7d top וכ׳ של שם היו ס׳ שמנים eighty benches (forms) of students were there. Tosef. l. c. 1I שבפונדקאות הס׳ the (movable) benches in inns; וכ׳ מלמדי של הס׳ the school teachers' benches (open frames serving as foot-rests for those behind). Kel. ספסף, סיפ׳ (denom. of סוף) to cut the ends of, trim; to graee. Naz. VI, 3(39a) שהוא כל שסי׳ או (Bart. ששיפששף, cmp. שפה) or trimmed his hair ever so little. Ib. 39b. Y. ib. VI, 55a bot. המספסף את לרבות to include (in the pro- hibition) him who trims his hair. Y. B. Kam. VI, 5c top אבניו סיפספה if tthe fire grazed his stones. ספק I (b. h.; cmp. ספד), Pi. סיפק 1) to strike, clap, esp. to clap the hands ayainst the hips to a certain tune in mourning or in rejoicing; cmp. טפח I. Bets. V, 2 (36b) ולא וכ׳ מספקין you must not clap or dance (on the Sabbath or Holy Day). Tosef. Sabb. VI (VII), 2 וכ׳ המספק he who strikes the hip, claps hands or dances by a fame (a su- perstitious practice); a. e. -- V. סיפוק I. --- 2) (cmp. נ, קקש) to yoin closely; to attach; to engraf Y. Sabb. V, beg. 7b חבל על חבל במספק when he ties a rope to a rope (of the halter). Kil. VI, 9 וכ׳ בחבל ספקה if, in training the vine, he attached to it a rope or a reed (with which he fastened it to a plant). Par.
