עבר I (b. h.) pr. n. m. Eber, a descendant of Shem, believed to have maintained schools (oracles) in connec- tion with Shem. Gen. R. s. 63 (ref. to Gen. XXV, 22) וע׳ שם של למדרשו to the school of Shem and Eber. Ib. s. 37 וכ׳ ע׳ היה גדול נביא E. was a great prophet, for he gave names alluding to coming events. Ib. s. 42 (expl. העברי, Gen. XIV, 13) ע׳ של בניו מבני שהוא because he is a descendant of Eber; a. fr.
עבר II m. (b. h.; עבר) border, bank, side. Gen. R. s. 42 (expl. העברי, v. preced.) וכ׳ אחד מע׳ כולו העולם כל the whole world was on one side (idolaters), and he (Abraham) on the other side; וכ׳ הנהר מע׳ שהוא because he came from the banks of the river (EEuphrates), and spoke the Hebrew language (v. עברו). - לים מע׳ beyond the sea. Erub. 55a (ref. to Deut. XXX, 12) . . לים מע׳ אם אחריה לעבור if the Law be beyond the sea, thou must go over to learn it.

עברה f. (עבר) 1) = העברה q. v. 2) passing by; מ־ ע׳ passing from one act to another, ceasing. Y. B. Kam. II, 3a top עברתן בשעת while they were passing by. Nidd. I,7וכ מלאכול עברתן בשעת when they cease to eat TT'rumah.
עברה f. (b. h.; עבר 1) [swelling, running over,] anger, indignation. Ex. R. s. 15 היא קשה עובר שאני שהע׳ severe is the anger with which I am filled. Tanh. Vaethh. 6 עליו בע׳ הקביה נתמלא the Lord was flled with anger at. him (with ref. to Deut. III, 26). Yalk. Deut. 820 (expl. ויתעבר, Deut. l. c.) ע׳ עלי נתמלא. Gen. עגבה f., pl. עגבות (עגב to be round) rump, buttocks (cmp. עקב). Snh. 38b וכ׳ מאקרא.. עגבותיו (not עגביותיו) the earth for Adam's rump was taken from Akra &c.; Yalk. Ps. 888. Nidd. 30b עגבותיו ב׳ על עקביו וב׳ and its (the foetus) two heels lie against the two sides of its rump; Lev. R. s. 14; Yalk. ib. 547. Ber. 24a ערוה משום. ע׳ the contact of posteriors (of two persons lying in one bed) does not come under the class of indecency (as regards prayer). Sabb. 152a (expl. החגב, Koh.
