a. v. fr. -- Trnsf. evidence, proof. Sabb. 81a עד עליה יש אאם (euphem.) if there is an evidence (stain of excrements) on it. B. Kam. 11a top (ref. to Ex. XXII, 12) עורה עד יביא Ar. (ed. אדורה, עדודה, v. אדר) he shall offer in evidence its hide. - Esp. a piece of cloth used by women for as- certaining their condition of cleanness or uncleanness. Nidd. VIII, 4 וכ׳ נתון שהוא עד if an examining rag (after use) has been put under the cushion &c. עדה I f. (b. h.; יעד) [appointed meeting,] assembly, congregation; court; prayer meeting. Tosef. Snh. XII, 3 (ref. to Ex. XXI, 18) וכ׳ לעדיםa לע׳ הידוע אגרוף מה as the fist (of the slayer) is ascertained before court and wit-- nesses, so must the stone (weapon) be &c.; B. Kam. 90b; ib. 91a. Snh. I, 6 (ref. to Num. XXXV, 24, sq.) שופטת ע׳ מצלת וע׳ there must be a possibility of an incriminating assembly (of ten persons), and of a saving assembly, which makes twenty persons;וכ׳ שהיא ומניןלע׳ and where do we find an intimation that an 'edah consists of ten?; Y. עדות f. (b. h.; v. עד) testimony, evidence. Ber. 14b וכ׳ ע׳ מעיד כאילו as if offering evidence of falsehood against himself. Succ. 29a שקר ע׳ מעידי those who give false witness. Sabb. 22b (ref. to Lev. XXIV, 3) היא ע׳ וכ׳ עולם לבאי it (the light in the Temple) is an evidence to mankind that the Divine Presence dwells in Israel; Men. 86b. Ib. עדותה מאי how did it give evidence (of the Divine Presence)?; Sabb. l. c. עדות מאי (corr. acc., as Ms. M.). Macc. 5a ע׳ של גופה (not עדיות) the testimony to the fact itself, v. סרה. Ib. I, 7 וכ׳ בשנים הע׳ מתקיימת אאם if an evidence is legally established by two witnesses, why does the Scripture mention three?
