עוקסא, v. עוקצא.
עוקץ m. (עקץ) [tail, end,] 1) (= קוץ) thorn, point, prick, sting. Y. Sabb. XIV, 14d top עקרב עוקן Scorpion's Tail (name of a lant); Y. Ab. Zar. II, 40d top. Gen. R. s. 12 למעלה שלו והע׳ the pointed stroke of the letter He is directed upwards. Kel. XIII, 5; Sabb. 52b עוקצה.. מחט a needle whose point is broken off (v. חור I); a. e. - Esp. the peduncle of fruits. Succ. III, 6 עוקצו נטל iff its (the Ethrog's) peduncle is off. IIkts. I, 6; a. fr. -- Pl. עוקצים, עוקצין. Lev. R. s. 30 ע׳ בה ויש אוכל בה יש תמרה on the palm there is eatable fruit and there are prickles. Ikts. l. c. תאנים עוקצי the peduncles of figs; a. fr. ו־bktsium, ׳btsin, name of a treatise of the Mishnah and Tosefta, of the Order of Toharoah. Hor. 13b בע׳ וניתני מר ניתי come, sir, lecture on llktsin. Ib. עקצים גלי explain t. - 2) (ss b. h. עצה) [spine,] haunch (uwith tail). Tam. III, 1. Ib. IV, 3. Hull. 93a; a. e. -- 3) (eפ קצה) corner, recess. Y. Dem. V, 24c bot. וע׳ ע׳ כל בתחלת (not בתחלה) at the be- ginnig of each corner (in which fruits are piled up).
עוקצא ch. same, 1) sting, tail, spine. Num. R. s. 20 עוקציך מן לא דובשיך מן לא I want neither thy honey nor thy sting; Midr. Till. to Ps. I, 5 מעוקצך. . . Y. Naz.IX, 57a like fish that are fried, דהן עוקציה גבי דהן רישיה the head of one by the side of the other's tail. Ber. 58b דעקרבא ע׳ (Ar. עקוסא) the prick (tail) of the Scorpio. Erub. 100b ע׳ להו דאית Ms. M. (ed. עוקצי ליה דאית; Ar. a. Ms. O. עוקסא) when they (the shoes) have spurs (pegs in the sole); a. e. --- Pl. עוקצי, v. supra. - 2) corner, recess. -- Pl. as ab. Sabb. 106b וכ׳ ע׳ ע׳ דליכא היכא כל (Ms. O. אוקסי) a vivarium wwhicch is not divided of in recesses is called a small vivarium; Bets. 24a (Ar. עוקסי אוקסי; v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 20).
עור I (b. h.) [to be stirred up, v. ערר,] to wake (act. a. neut.). [Y. B. Bath. III, 14a לעורו וצריך, read לעורר, v. infra.]-- Part. ער; f ערה; pl. ערים; ערות, עי׳. B. Kam. II, 5 ושן בין ער בין whether awake or asleep. Nidd. 12a. Sabb, 55b; Snh. 82a (ref. to Mal. II, 12) ועונה. . ער לו יהיה שלא וכ׳ he shall have none awakening (teaching) among the teachers and none responding among the scholars. Cant. R. to V, 2 חסדים לגמילת ער ולבי המצות מן ישנה אני I am asleep (negligent) in ceremonies, but my heart is awake for charity; לעשותן ער ולבי הצדקות מן ישנה אני Iam asleep (careless) about righteous deeds, but my heart awakens me (stirs me up) to do them; ib. לגאלני ער הקבה של ולבו but the heart of the Lord, is awake (anxious) to redeem me; Pesik. Hahod. p. 46b; Pesik. R. s. 15 להקב'ה ער ולבי לגאלני but my heart is awake (waiting) for the Lord to redeem me; Yalk. Cant. 988; Tanh. ed. Bub., Tol'doth 18. DerEr. Zuta ch. V העי׳ ער..בין אדם יהא לא one must not be awake ammong those sleeping, nor asleep among those awake. Nidd. l. c. ע׳ בין ישנות בין whether they are a- sleep or awake; a. fr. Nif. נעור, ני׳ to be awake, wake up; to be stirred up, become active. B. Bath. 74b נעור ורי ישן רא והיה (not ניער) R. E. was aleep, and R. J. awake. Gitt. VIII, 2 (778a) וכ׳ קוראה נעורה (ני׳) when she woke up, she read and found it was her letter of divorce. Ab. III, 4 בלילה הנ׳ he who is awake by night. Sifre Deut. 314 שיעורו כדי בניו (not שיעירו) that his young brood may wake up; Yalk. ib. 944. Oant. R. to IV, 8 (read] וכ׳ נעור הוא בתחלה (or נכער, v. ר II) first he bestirs himself (and proceeds) from the Temple &c.; a. fr. -- Ab. Zar. 73a, a. fr. מין מצא וניעור מינו את kind found its kind and was stirred up, i. e. the two equal elements in the mixture join to become working agents. -- V. נער II. Hif. העיר to wake uup; to stir up, instigate. Gen. R. s. 43 וכ׳ מזרחיים של לבם שה׳ זה הוא מי who was he that stirred up the heart of the eastsrn nations that they should come and fall &c. ; Yalk. Is. 31 1 של בלבם שה׳ אזדחיים (corr. acc.). Ib. וכ׳ לבא העירן ומי. . . ישנים the nations were too indiiferent to come under the wings of the Lord, and who waked them up to come under his wings? Snh. 25b (expl. יונים מפריחי, ib. III, 3) אלו וכ׳ שמעירין Ms. M. (ed. שממרין) those who stir up the pigeons (on which they bet), v. מרה II. Hof. הוער to be stirred up, be removed. Gen. R. s. 85 העולם מן שה׳, v. ער II; Yalk. ib. 145. Polelעור 1) to wake uup. Y. Ber. I, 2d (ref. to Ps..LVII, 9) מעוררן השחר להיות . . דרכן it is usual with kkings that the dawn wakes them up; Tanh. B'hil. 10 מעורר השחר דרך וכ׳ מעורר.. usually the dawn wakes the sons of man, but I wake the dawn up. Y. Ber. IX, 13a bot, הוא . . היודע אתכם יעורר he that knows your numbers wake you (from death); a. fr. -- Y. Ter. V, end, 43a ליאסר מינו את מעורד stirs up its kind (makes it an agent) to become forbidden, v. supra. - Maas. Sh. V, 15 המעוררים את בטל abolished the wakers; Sot. IX, 10, expl. ib. 48a; Tosef. ib. XIII, 9 מעוררין וכ׳ הלוים אילו the wakers are the Levites, who . . . sang, Awake &c. (Ps. XLIV, 24). Lev. R. s. 7, beg. היא. . שנאה דינין דיני עליהן עוררה hatred . . . . stirred up against them judgment upon judgment; a. fr. - 2) to excite to lamentation, arrange a memorial service, cngage a trabb- elling wailer. M. Kat. I, 5 וכ׳ יעורר לא one must not arrange a memorial service &c., v. ספדנא; ib. 8a יערער לא, v. ערער. -3) to raise an o~jection; to contest the legalitty offf.. Y. B. Bath. III, 14a (interch. with ערו) צריך. . שערר מכיון עליו לעורר since he contested the right of possession in three successive years, he need no longer contest. Ib. לעורו צריך (corr. acc.); v. ערר a. ערער. Hithpol. התעורר, Nithpol. נתעורר 1) to be waked up; to bestir one's self. Lev. R. l. c. עליהן שנתעוררה שנה עד וכ׳ up to the year when it (hatred) was stirred up againsth them &c. Ib. s. 9 (ref. to Cant. IV, 16) הגליות לכשיתעוררו וכ׳ when the exiled colonies in the north are waked up (to be redeemed), they will come &c.; ib. לכשיתעורר וכ׳ גוג when Gog bestirs himself (to war) &c. Ib. דבר ונתע׳ ישן שהוא a thing (the daily offering) which was asleep (during the captivity) and has been reawakened (reinstated); a. e. - 2) to be lively; to enjoy one's self. Midr. Till. to Ps. CXLIX וכ׳ עלי התעוררו enjoy yourselves with me at your pleasure.
