Ps. CVIII, 10) שם נתעכלו כך בסיר מתעכל הבשר מה as flesh is consumed (boiled to a pulp) in the pot, so they (David's family) were consumed there (in Moab; v. Yalk. Sam. 147; Tanh., ed. Bub., Vayera 25).
עכל ch., Pa. עכל same. Targ. Job XX, 18 Ms. Ithpa. איעכל to be consumed, burnt. Shebu. 17b דלא אי מיעכל לא ביה הפיך (v. Ms. M. in D. S. a. l. note) if withouut turning it, the sacrifice had not been consumed. Ib. אאי שעתא בהד מיעכל . . . מיעכלי בהו הפיך לא if he had not turned them (the pieces), they would have been consumed in two hours, and now all of it was consumed in one hour.
עכמאי 1) pr. n. m. 'Akhmai. Y. Ter. XI, end, 48b; Y. Sabb. II, 4a top, v. יונתן. - 2) ע׳ בן pr. n. pl.(). Yeb. 15b ע מבן צבועים בית משפחת; Y. ib. 3a bot. ענוביי בית משפחת צבועים מבית.
בכן (cmp. עכב) to be curved, curled. Pi. עיכן (cmp. עילה, סיבה end) to bring about, to cause. Snh. 44b (play on ןaע, Josh. VII, 24) עוונותיהם שעי . זמרי וכ׳ his name was Zimri (IChr. II, 6), but he was named khan (Circle), because he caused tthe punishment of Israel's sins.

עכן(עכן) m., עכנf. (עכן; cmp. חכיוא) annulated snake. [Lam. R. to I, 3 בית עכן אמר, read, as Num. R. s. 12 מת כbאעפ אמרו.]-- Lev. R. s. 16 (play on תעכסנה, Is. II I, 6, v. עכס) ע׳ של כארס .. הריח אותו והיה and the scent (of the balsam) permeated them like the venom of a snake; Sabb. 62b ע׳ של כארס Ms. O. (ed. בכעוס כארס, v. כעוס); Yalk. Lam. 1031 בהם עכנה ונצרר (a misplaced corrupt. of ע׳ של כארס). -- Pl. עכנים, עכנין. Sifre Deut. 321 (ref. to עפר זחלי, Deut. XXXII, 24) וכ׳ ע׳ אלו (not עשנים, Var. הכינים, read; חכינים) that means the snakes whose ruler- ship is in the dust; Yalk. ib. 945 עכינין.
עכנא, עבינא c. ch. (also in B. dict.) same. Targ. Y. Ex. XXVI, 28 (ed. pr. עכי׳). - B. Mets. 84b לע׳ אאשכחוה למערתא לה דהדירא thhey found a snake encircling the cave; וכ׳ פיך פתחי ע׳ ע׳ snake, snake, open thy mouth (drop the tail out of thy mouth), and let the son enter &c.; ib. 85a דלת פתחי Ms. M. עכנאי, (עכינאי) pr. n. m. 4khnai (ikhinai). Kel. V, 10 ע׳ של תנורו the oven of 'A. (consisting of tiles cemented with sand); Ber. 19a. Ib. שהקיפוהו . . . ע׳ מהו זה כעכנא הלכות (not כעכנאי) why is it called the oven of A.. . . . It intimates that they encircled it with discussions as the snake (winds itself around an otbject; v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note ?); B. Mets. 59b זו כעכנא.

עכס m. (cmp. עכן; b. h. chain, clasp) adder, viper (believed to kill a flying bird by looking at its shadow). Mekh. B'shall., Vayassa, s. l (expl. אפעה, Is. XXX, 6); Tanh. B'shall. 18; Yalk. Jer. 266.

*עכסילו, GGen. R. s. 98 קשת במזל . . . ע זו, a corrupt ggloss, prob. to be read; וכ כסלו חדש זה; v. Yalk. H'ubeni, B'resh., to Gen. I, 3 כסלו מזל קשת. צלרpp. hh.) to stir up, disturb; to trouble, make turbid to sadden. Sot. 5a עוכרתו . . . אדם כל if a man has swelling of wind (haughtiness) in him, the slightest breeze will trouble him (the slightest adversity will upset him); ים מה וכ׳ עוכרתו . . . if the sea .. . is stirred up by the slightest breeze &c. Y. Keth. I 25b bot. וכ׳ העין את לעוכר (not לעובר) like one troubling the eye, which becomes clear again. Ber. 25b ברגלו עוכרן he must stir them up with his foot. Gen. R. s. 80, end (ref. to עכרתם, Gen. XXXIV, 30) צלולה אותה ועכרתם החבית היתה the wine in the cask was clear, and you have troubled it; Yalk. ib. 135 ונכרתוה. Nidd. 20a ועוכרן חור צללו if the mixture became clear (the earth settled), he must stir it again; a. fr. -- Part. pass. עכור; f.. עכורה; pl. עכורים, עכורין; עכורות. Ib. ע אלא צלולין . .. אין you must not examine the mixture when it is clear, but when it is turbid; Tosef. ib. III, 11. Gen. R. l. e. היתה ע׳ אותה וצללנו . . the wine was turbid, and we cleared it (we redeemed our honor). Snh. 44b; Lev. R. s. 9 (ref. to Josh. VII, 25) וכ ע׳ אתה ואי ע׳ אתה הזה היום thou art troubled (punished) this day, but thou shalt not be troubled in the hereafter. Sifre Deut. 48 ממים. .. בוראך של ממים שתה וכ׳ ע drink of the water of thy Creator's well, and drink not muddy water, nor be attracted by the words of the heretics; Yalk. Prov. 931; a. fr. -- Ex. R. s. 22 (ref. to Job XVI, 17) ע תפלה יש וכי is there also a turbid prayer? Ib. ע שתפלתו . . . מנין where is it intimated that the prayer of him in whose hand is robbery, is turbid (re- jected) ? Nif. נעכר to be stirred up; to become turbid, dreggy, foul. Nidd. 9a חלב ונעשה נ דם the blood (of a pregnant animal) is disturbed (decomposed), and turns into milk. Y. Sot. IV, 19c bot. וכ׳ נ החלב אין the milk (of a nurs- ing woman) becomes turbid only after three months (after conception). Y. Nidd. S. a. l. note) liquid emptied from a large measure into a smaller one is stirred up (and what remains in the large measure partakes of the sacred character of the liquid in the smaller, sacred vessels), whereas dry objects are not stirred up.
