עלף I (b. h.; cmp. עלם I, II), Pi. עילף to enclose, encase (cmp. Arab. galaf). - Part. pass. מעולף; f מעולפת. Gen. R. s. 54 וכ׳ שני מבין המע׳ thou (Ark) encased between the two Cherubs; (Midr. Sam. ch. XII כרובים בשני המפוארה; Ab. Zar. 24b עדיים בעדי מפוארת).
עלף II (b. h.; cmp. חלף) to turn, change. Hithpa. התעשף, Nithpa. נתעף (interch. with התעלפה, formed fr. a noun עלפה, v. Ez. XXXI, 15) 1) to change of, take turns. Tosef. Taan. I, 8 עליה מתעלפין היו ולא וכ׳ they did not change off (in watching) over it, but one sat &c. -- 2) to be overcome, faint, swoon. Hull, 3b ׳ ולא . . . לפנינו שחט when he cut in our (the judges') presence, without being overcome (hishand not trembling); ib. יתעלף שמא (Ar. יתעעלפה) lest his hand tremble; ib. ברי נתעלפתי שלא לי I am sure that my hand did not tremble. Sabb. 9b יתעלפה שמא he may swoon (in the vapor bath). Nidd. 69b יתעלפה שמא he may be in a swoon (and not really dead). Midr. Sam. ch. XXIII ומתעלפים, v. עוף I; a. e. Pa. עות same.
