עפל (b. h.) to swell, rise. - V. עופל. Hif. העפיל to act rashly, be foolhardy. Sabb. 97a מן הוה המעפילים Ms. M. (v. Rabb. D. S. a.l. note; ed. מויעפילו) he was one of the foolhardy (Num. XIV, 44); Yalk. Num. 749 המעפילין.

עפעפים m. Du. (b. h.; עפעף, Pilp. of עפף or עוף) [wings,] eye-lids. Sabb. בע׳ שיער מרבה . . . פוד eye-paint advances the growth of the eye-lashes; Pesik. Aniya, p. 135a. Ber. 60b כפעפי, v. תנומה.
עפף (reduplic. of עוף II) to fiy around. Midr. Till. to Ps. XVIII, 5 וכ טסות הצרות עפפוני אלא אפפוני תקרי אל read not afafuni (with א) but dfafunt (with ע׳),troubles come fying over me like birds; Yalk. Sam. 157.

עפר, Pi. עיפר (b. h.; denom. of עפר) to cast dust, cover with muddtt. Hithpa.התעפר to be soiled. Lam. R. introd. (R. Abbahu 6) בעפר ומתעפרים .. ישנים והם they sleep on the bare earth and become soiled with dust; ib. to III, 13.
עפר (b. h.; עפר to be thick, cmp. אבק; v. עופר) dust, mud, sand, mortar. Gen. R. s. 14 (ref. to Gen. II, 7) זכר ע׳ וכ׳ זכר ע׳ מביא היוצר נקבה אדמה 'afar represents the male element, ddamah, the female; the potter takes male dust (coarse sand) and female earth (soft clay), in order that the vessels be strong. Sot. II, 2 מתחתיה ע נוטלhe (the priest) takes earth from under it (the marble slab). Ib. 16a מצינו ע׳ שקרוי אפר we find that ashes are likewise called 'afar; Hull. 88b;Gen. R.s. 49b. Ib. סוטה עפר the dust used in prepar- ing the Water ofealousy; כיסוי ע׳ the earth or ashes used for covering up the blood at slaughtering (Lev. XVII, 13); Num. R. s. 9. Ib. תחזדר זכתה לא ואפר ע׳ ואנכי . . זכתה לעפרה if she is worthy (innocent), let a son descend from her like Abraham, of whom it is written, And I am dust and ashes (Gen.
