ערער I ch. same, to strip, make lonely. Part. pass. מערער; . מערערתא. Pesik. Aniya, p. 134b, a. e., v. preced.
ערער III (v. ערע I) [to bring into contact,] 1) to keep a liguid in the throat for the sake of luubrication. Tosef. Sabb. XII (XIII), 10 if one has a sore throat, יעריכרו לא וכ בשמן he must not lubmcate it with oil(on the Sabbath); Ber. 36a יערעגו לא (Pii. of ערע; Ar. יערער׳); Tosef. Ter. IX, 12 יערענו (ed. Zuck. ירדנו); Y. Shebi. VIII, 38a top יערער׳, -- 2) to cause to meet. Koh. R. to IX, 11 (ref. to יקרה, ib.; cmp. ערעיתא I) ומערערת האדם שפוגעת היא עת וכ׳ בו it is time that strikes man and causes all these things (vicissitudes) to meet himm.
ערער II ch. same, to join, meet. Koh. R. to VII, 27 מערערא, v. ערע I.
ערער III (transpos. of רערע, v. רעע) to make shaky, loosen. -- Part. pass. מערער; f מגרערה. Lam. R. introd. (R. Hanina 2) (ret. to רכה, Prov. XXV,19) מע׳ שן a shaky tooth, v. מטמם.

ערער, (ערעור, m. (ערער I) protest; evidence of illlegitimacy or disgualification. Keth. 21b אחד על ע׳ וקרא מהן and the qualification of one of the judges was con- tested; ib. sq. דמאי ע׳ of what nature was that alleged disqualification; דגולנותא ע׳ a disqualification based on the charge of robbery; משפחה דפגם ע׳ based on alleged family blemish (descent from slaves). B. Bath. 31b, sq. וכ׳ איכא חד ע׳ they differ as to acting on the evidence of disqualification proffered by one witness; סבר אלעזר ר׳ חד ע׳ R. El. is of the opinion that evidence of disquali- fication by one witness is sufficient; תרי ע׳ it requires two witnesses; Keth. 26a. Ib., a. fr. משנים פחות ע׳ אין in charges of disqualification no less tthan two witnesses are required. Y. Bicc. ערף (b. h.) 1) to divide, cut. Sifre Deut. 306 (ref. to יערק, Deut. XXXII, 2) לי ערוף אלא . .. פרוט . . . יערף אין וכ׳ ya drof is a Phoenician (mercantile) term, e. g. one does not say to one's neighbor, p ro (break into small change) this Sel a for me, but drof for me &c. - Denom. עורף. -- 2) (cmp. טף a. קטף) to drop, distill. Taan. 7a (ref. to Deut. l. c.) כמטר עורפיהו לאו ואם . . . תח אם if a scholar is worthy, he is like dew; if unworthy, drop him like rain; Yalk. DDeut. 942 ערפהסו. -- 3) (denom. of עורף) to break tbe aeck of; esp. to break the neck of a heiifer to atone for a murder the author of mwhich is unknomwn (Deut. XXI,. 189); to perform the ceremmony of atonement. Sot. IX, 2 עורפין היו לא they did not perform the ceremony. Ib. 45b; a. fr. -Ib. IX, 5וכ בקופיין אותה ועורפין and(if the ground is not hard and rough) they cut her head from behind with a hatchet. -- Part. pass. ערוף; f ערופה. -ע׳־ עגלה, v. עגלה. -- 4) (cmp. אחר) (of copulations of animals) to cover (fronm. behind). Ib. 42b (play on ערפה) וכ׳ עורפין שהכל all covered her from behind. Nif. נערף, Nithpa. נתערף to have the neck broken. Ib. IX, 747a) וכ׳ נערפה שלא עד ... נמצא (Y. ed. תיערף שלא עד) if the murderer was discovered before he heifer was put to death; העגלה משנתערפה Mish. (Y. a. Bab. ed. משנערפה) after the ceremony had taken place. Ib. 46a דבר דבוא וכ׳ ויערף .. let there be brought a thing which has not yet produced fruit (a heifer) and be broken in a place which prodfuces no fruit, and atone for the murder of him who was prevented from producing fruit (good. deeds on earth). Ex. R. s. 42, end (play on ערף קשה, Ex. XXXII, 9) להערף הם ראויים they deserve to have their necks broken; a. e.
ערף ch. same, to break the neck of the heifer. Sot. 46a ערפינן דלא נמי הכי is it really so that we do not perform the ceremony (in such a case)?
ערף, pl. ערפין, substitute for ערכין, v. ערך. Y. Ned. I, beg. 36cערקין ערצין ע׳ ... תנינן ואילו but iff we were to teach (substitutes for rakhin), what would we teach ?? Arafn, aratsin, drakin.

ערפא m. =h. עורף. Pl. ערפין (in singular sense). Yalk. Lev. 665 קדרון חמי ע׳ חמי (read; קדלין) look at the (fat) neck, look at the back; [obviously one a gloss to the other; difer. in Lev. R. s. 34, a. Koh. R. to V, 13].
ערפד m. arpad, a species of bats. B. Kam. 16a עטלף וכ׳ ע׳ נעשה . the bat after seven years changes into an arpad, the arpad &c., v. קימוש.
ערפדא, ערפידא ch. same, bat (h. עטלף). Targ. Y. I Ieut. XIV, 18 (Y. II חרפתא); Targ. Y. Lev. XI, 19 טרפידא (טרפירא) (corr. acc.).
ערפה (b. h.) pr. n. f. Orpah, wife of Chilion, son of Naomi, iin legend identified with Harafah (II Sam. XXI, 22). Sot. 42b וכ׳ ע שהורידה דמעות ארבע בשכר as a reward for four tears which O. shed, when parting with her mother- inedaw she was privileged to rear four mighty ment(II Sam. l. c.). Ib. וכ׳ שמה ע׳ her real name was O., and why was she called Harafah?, v. הריפות. Ib. ע׳ . . . שמח הרפה he real name was Harafah, and why was she called O. ?, v. ערף.
