*פגנות f. (פגן) entreaty. - Pl. פגניות. Pirke dR. El. ch. XXXV (ref. to Koh. VII, 8) דברי כל ואומר.. . יום שבכל פ׳(not פנגיות) who was long-suffering every day and spoke all possible words of entreaty.
פגניקא m. pl. (paganica, sub. indumenta); פ׳ מאנין garments f a commmoner. Midr. Sam. ch. XXIV (ref. to ISam. XXVIII, 8) פ׳ מ׳ he put on a commmoner's garments; Lev. R. s. 26 נפיקא מאנויין (corr. acc.).
פגע (b. h.) 1) to strike against, come in contact with, meet; (in a hostile sense) to attaek, strike. Tanh. Vayishl. 4 בעשו שפ׳ כיון when he met Esau. Gen. R. s. 75 בלובשי פ׳ ברול he met those clad in iron armor. Succ. 52b, a. e. אם זה מנוול בך ׳, v. נוול. Y. Kidd.III, 64a bot. פגעתה לא ולמה בו (not ביה) why didst thou not connect thyself with him? Num. R. s. 5 וכ׳ הדין מדת בכולם תפגע שלא כדי (not יפגע) in order that divine justice might not strike all of them, he took half of his name (the letter ה) &c. Ex. R. s. 5, end במשה לפגגוע . . . בקששה divine justice wanted to strike Mases. Koh. R. to IX, 11 וכ׳ באדם שפוגעת היא עת (not האדם), v. ערער III. -- 2) to beseech, entreat. Gen. R. s. 68 (ref. to Gen. פגע m. (b. h.; preced.) contact, accident, (evil) oc- curence; affietion, plague. Ber. 17a רע מפ ותצילני and save me from meeting with evil; a. e. - Pl. פגים, פגעין evil spirits. Shebu. 15b (expl. בשיר, Mish. ib. II, 2) the song of thanksgiving (Ps. XXX) וכ׳ ׳ של ושיר and the song referring to evil spirits (Ps. X0I, 1 -- 9), and some call it song of n'ga im (mlagues, with ref. to ונגע, ib. 10); Y. Erub. X, 26c bot. וכ׳ פ׳ של שיר היו אומרין they used to recite the 'song of demons in Jerusalem (in the Temple, when one was threatened with insanity); Y. Sabb. פגע II, פגעא ch. same, 1) evil occurrence, plague. Targ. IKings V, 18. - Pl. פגכין. Ruth R. to I, 16 (ref. to תפגעי אל ib., as iff it wwere תפגעי) תסבין לא עלי תחטא לא מני פ׳ (not פגעיד) do not commit a sin through me, do not sufter affdictions on my account (by dissuading me from embracing the Jewish faith). -2) pl. evil spirits. Targ. II Esth. I, 2.
פגעין m. pl. (cmp. פיקעין) plums. Sabb. 144b (Rashi in early eds. פיגעין; v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 50).
פגר, Pi. פיגר (cmp. פגם, בגר, פכר) to split, break up, destroy. Midr. Till. to Ps. XI, 3 . . . שהשתיתו הצדיקים אאם וכ׳ אותם ופיגרו when the wicked come and destroy the righteous that have established thy world &c.; Yalk. ib. 653 וכ׳ ופגרום דשעים עמדו . . השיתין אם if the wicked have risen and destroyed the foundations (of the Temple) which face the deep (v. שית). פגר II (b. h. Pi.) to be lax, faint (cmp. פוג). Pa. פגר 1) to relax, take vvacation, be idle. Sabb. 129b רבנן ביה דמפגרי יומא a day on which the teachers took a hotiday. - 2) to cause to relap. Keth. 103b לא סבר ור׳ אפגריה and Rabbi thought, Iwill not cause him to relax (in his charitable work, by appointing him a member of the college; or I will not wear him out', overburden him). Itthpa. איפגר to take vacation, absent one's self. Ib. 111b אתא ולא אי׳ he (the teacher) took a three days' vacation and did not come (to school). Ib. איפגרת אמאי why did you absent yourself? 143
