פטם (cmp. פטל, a. פטש s. v. פטיש) 1) to crush, pound, v. infra. - 2) to expand, make large, fatten. - Part. pass. פטום; f פטומה; p. פטומים, פטומין; פטומות. Keth. 67b פפ תרנגולת a fat chicken. Y. Kidd. I, 61b פטומות crammed birds; Y. Peah I, 15c bot. Y'lamd. to Gen. XXXVII quot. in Ar,, v. סיטוסימה; a. e. Pi. פיטם 1) to pound spices; to manufacture perfumed oil; to compound incense. Y. Succ. V, 55c bot. ולא תיקנוה וכ׳ מפטמת היתה they mended the mortar, but it did not mix the drugs as well as before; Arakh. 10b, Ker. I, 1 השמן את המפשם he that manufactures perfumed oil (in the same manner as prescribed for the Temple, Ex. XXX, 23 sq.); הקטרת את המפ׳ who mixes incense (as prescribed ib. 34 sq.). Y. פטם ch., Pa. פטם same, 1) to pound, mix spices. Targ. Y. Ex. XXX, 25; 35 מפטם Ar. (ed. v. מז; h. text רקה). -- 2) to fatten -- Part. pass. מפטם; l. מפטמין, מססמי. Targ. Is. XXX, 24 (Kimhi פטים). Targ. Prov. XV, 17. -- Pes. 76b מהדדו מפטמי they are fattened (or flavored) wwith one another. -- 3) to flavor one's words (cmp. בם), to console, cheer up. B. Mets. 66a הוא בעלמא מילי פטומי it was merely meant to cheer up (the neighbor, not s a. binding promise).

פטם m. (preced. wds.). 1) druggist, apothecary. - Pl. פטמים, פטמין. Y. Yoma IV, 41d bot. שבירוששלם הפ׳ the druggists of Jerusalem. Y. Sot. VIII, 22c top שהפ׳ כדרך עושין as the apothecaries are in the habit of doing. Gen. R. s. 16; Yalk. ib. 21, v. בדולח; a. e. 2) one who fattens animmals for sale, dealer in fattened animals, opp. to רועה. Bets. 29b; Tosef. ib. III, 6 וכ׳ הפ׳ אצל . . . הולך a person may go (on the Holy Day) to a dealer whose regular customer he is, and say, give me a dove &c. Bets. 38a פ׳ של שור an ox at the dealer's stall, contrad. to רועה של. Pesik. Bahod., p. 104b פטומות . . . הפ׳ אצל he took her to the crammer, and filled her lap with crammed birds; Yalk. פטניתא f. (supposed to mean) fattened (fr. פטן= פטם); v., however, בטניתא.
פטפוט, פיט׳ m. (פטט, cmp. פתת) [something minute, tender,] one of the clay pins foroming a sortt of tripod for the support of a pot, peg. Sabb. VIII, 4 פ׳ לעשות כדי a. quantity of clay large enough for a peg. -- [Yalk. Num. 785 מנורה של פוט the peg for a candlestick v., however, quot. fr. Siure Zutta in R. S. to Kel. XI, 2.--- Pl. פטפוטים,. פטפוטין, פי׳, (פטפטי). Sabb. 102b כירה פיטפוטי עושה עני וכ׳ קטנה a poor man makes pegs for a small stove to put on it a small pot (which is also called building). Kel. V, 11 פ׳ לה עשה if he made legs for the stove (so that it no longer rests immediately on the ground); Tosef. ib. B. Kam. IV, 20. Ib. V, t וכ׳ שנתנן פטפט׳ . .. שלשה three pege, three pins or three legs stuck in the ground and joined with clay to put a pot on them; Kel. VI, 1. Tosef. l. c. 7 פטפוטי (read טין . . .). Ib. 8. פטפט פיט׳ (v. preced., a. פטטא) 1) to talk, babble. Men. 65a כנגדו מפטפם שהיה אחד מזקן חוץ except one old man who talked (childishly) against him. - 2) ביצרו פ׳ to talk or argue with one's own passion, to conguer one's slf. B. Bath. 109b (play on פוטיאל בנות, Ex. VI, 25) דאתי ביצרו שפ׳ מיוסף Elazar was a descendant of Joseph, רwho (is surnamed Putiel, oecause he) conquered his passion; Ex. R. s. 7, end שפיטם . ביצרו שפ׳ יוסף . . . אשתו שהיתה וכ׳ his wife was a descendant of two families, being on one side of the tribe of Joseph who conquered his passon, and on the other of the family of Jethro who fattened. &, v. פטם; Sot. 43a.
