פקוע, פקועא, פקועה m. ch. -next w. Y. Shebi. III, beg. 34a (expl. מתוק, Shebi III, 1) פקוע R. S. to Shebi. l. c. (ed. פקועה). Ib. דבקעתא פקועא ההן R. S. (ed. עה . . .) that means the pakkua of the valley. [R. S. cracks in the soil of the valley, v. מתוק II.]

פקועה part. pass. of פקע.
פקוקלת f., pl. פקוקלות (reduplic. of פקל) ramification of sinews. Sifra Vayikra, N'dab., ch. XVII, Par. 14 (ref. to הכסלים על . . . החלב, Lev. III, 10) הפ׳ שבין החלב וה that means the fat between the sinews (in the loins); Tosef. Hull. IX, 14 פקוקרות; Yalk. Lev. 462 הפקוקרות (or הפקוקרת). Sifra l. c., ch. XIX (ref. to Lev. III, 9) להביא הפ׳ בין . הסמוך החלב את this includes the fat near the tail, which is the fat between the sinews.
פקוקלתא ch. same. Gen. R. s. 7s שרי דגידא פ׳ הא the ramification of the nervus ischiadicus is permitted; Yalk. ib. 133 שריא דגידא פ׳ הדין (read; הדא).

פקח (b. h.) to break through, open. Pi. פיקח 1) to open. B. Bath. 12b מפקחו יין . . . אפילו even if his heart be closed like a virgin (his mind be dull), wine will open it (make it bright). -Esp. (with גל) to open a heap of debris; to attempt to rescue a person supposed to be buried in debris. Ohol. XVI, 4 בגל המפשח he who digs among debris (not knowing certainly that a corpse is buried there). Pes. VIII, 6. Keth. 15b עליו לפקח הבל את as regards digging for his sake (on tthe Sabbath). Ib. 5a נפש פיקוח מפשקחין, v. פיקוח; a. fr. -- 2) [to have the eyes open,] to guard, watch, care. Ib. על לפקח . . . הולכין וכ׳ רבים עסקי we may assemble in synagogues and school houses (in theatres and circuses) in order to watch over public affairs, on the Sabbath. Sabb. 150b עסקי על לפקח וכ׳ כלה to make arrangements for the reception of s bride &c.; Y. Ber. III, beg. 5a; a. fr. Pif. נפקח, Hithpa. התפעת, Nithpa. נתפח (v. פעח) 1) to recover the faculty of hearing (and speech). Gitt. II, 6. Yeb. 113a. Gen. R. s. 53; a. e. - 2) to recover the faoulty of speech. Pesik. פקח I ch. same, to open (the eye); (with על) to guard, care. Targ. Job XIV, 3. Ib. XXVII, 19. Targ. Ps. (XLVI, 8; a. fr. Pa. פמח 1) to remove debris. Targ. Koh. III, 5. -- 2) to make open-minded, bright. Hor. 13b; Snh. 70a; Yoma 76b פקחין ( פקחני) made me open-minded, v. דיחגא. Pthpe. אתפקח to awaken, become sober. Targ. Ps. LXXVIII, 65 (h. text מתרונן).
פקח II m. (preced.) brighteness, prudence. Targ. Prov. XXVI, 12 וכ׳ סכלא פ׳ Ms. (ed. only סכלא, v. Pesh.) the cunning of a fool is better than his (h. text תקוה),
פקח פיק׳ m.פקחת, פיק׳ f (b. h.; preced. wds.) [open,] 1) (opp. to חרש) hearing. Yeb. XIV, 1שנשא חרש וכ׳ ופ׳ פ׳ if a deaf mute married one hearing, or a hearing person married &c.; ונתחרשה פ׳ שנשא פ׳ if one hearing married one hearing, and she became deaf (and dumb); a. fr. - 2) (opp. to סומא or עור) seeing. Ex. R. s. 36 משל וכ׳ וסומא לפ׳ like a seeing and a blind man walking together &c. Ib. s. 3 (ref. to Ex. IV, 11) פ׳ לראייה פ׳ לשמיעה pikkeah refers both to sight and to hearing; a. e. -3) (opp. to טפש) brightt, smartt, prudent. Keth. 88a (in Chald. dict.) וכ׳ הוא פ׳ אי if he (the husband) be prudent, he may cause her to have an oath administered to her according to Biblical law. Y. Meg. פקטייא m. pl. =next w. Targ. Ps. LXXV, 9 דורדייהא ופקטייהא (ed. Wil. ופקטיהא; h.text ששמריה). - B. Mets. 40b להו איעביד מאי פקטך (sing. form) it is thy froth (of the oil which thou hast deposited with me), what has been done with it? (it is not my fault; Ms. O. לך אעביד מאי what can I do for thee?).
פקטים פקטין, פי׳ m. pl. (פקט to bursd forth, fer- mentt) froth, foam (of wine or oil). B. Mets. 40b . לוקח פ׳ בלא שמרים a purchaser of oil must accept a Log and a half of ees (to the barrel), but no froth. Ib. הלוקח אאחד לפ׳ המפקיד ואחד the aws concerning foamm are tthe same for the purchaser as for the depositor. Sifre Beut. 324 (ref. to Is. XXV, 6) פ׳ אלא דבר כלום בהם שאין שמרים lees in which there is nothing but froth (foul matter). Esth. R. to I, 3 וכ׳ פ׳ שמן יתנו שמא lest they put frothy (rancid) oil in the lamps, opp. פטים.
