ציצה f. (b. h.; preced. wds.) 1) flower, knob on the top of the central steom of the palm branch (Lulab). Y. Succ. III, beg. 53c ציצצתו יבשה (ed. Krot., a. Asheri to Succ. III, beg. ציציתו; Asheri quotes a Var. הוצין יבשו) if the top of the branch is withered. - 2) fringes. Gitt. 56a נשהיתה וכ׳ נגררת ציצתו the fringes of his cloak were dragged along on cushions. M. Kat. III, 4לציצתו תכלת Y. ed. (Mish. a. Bab. ed. 19a לציציתו; Rabb. D. S. quotes לציצתו) the blue thread for his show-fringes. -- Kel. XVI, 4 את ויעשה . . סקורטיא ציצתה (Ar. ציציתיה, read; ציצותיה) a leather apron is considered finished, when . he attaches its fringes (cords); [Maim.; a leather table cloth . . ., when he puts on a bright center piece]. - Pl. ציצות, v. supra.

ציצי tsitsi, a derisive imitation of the sound ts (צ) in certain formulas of benedictions. Men. 42a (ref. to a. person who had said the benediction ציצית לעשות) מאי הכי שמענא צ׳ what is that tsitsi I heard here ? Ber. 42a (ref. to the benediction הארן . .. המוציא) וכ׳ צ׳ מאי (Ms. K. ציו ציו).

ציצית f (b. h. ציצת, צוץ, v. צוציתא) 1) hair-lock. Sifra. Ahare, Par. 9, ch. XIII (ref. to Lev. XVIII, 3) חגדל שלא צ׳ that thou must not grow a lock (v. בלורית). Zeb. 26a; Yalk. Lev. 446 וכ׳ ועייתו בפנים הוא if the sacrifice stands (within the sacred precincts), and its locks (prob. the tuft of its tail) are without. - 2) fringe, esp. the shomr- fringes (Num. XV, 38). Sifre Num. 115 דבר אלא צ׳ אין שהוא כל ודבר היוצא by tsitsith is meant something that protrudes (hangs over) and is of a minute size; Men. 41b. Sifre . c. הגדילים מן וצ׳, v. גדילה II. Men. 39b מן פטורין הצ׳ require no show-fringes; בצ׳ חייבין require show- fringes; a. fr. -- M. Kat. III, 41019a), a. e., v. ציצה-- Pl. צייות. Men. 44a וכ׳ ציציותיו ארבע באו the four fringes of his garment came into sight and slapped him in the face (reproached him for his sensuality, reminding him of Num. XV, 39). Sifre l. c.; Men. ציצלין, v. צלצולין. ציקין m. pl. (יבק) [cast in a mould,] only in קדרה ציקי a sort of puddiing consisting of minced meats &c. mixed with wine and spices. Hull. 77b ק׳ צ׳ עשאן he minced them (the bones &c.) for a pudding. B. Mets. 86b לצ׳ הללו ק׳ those (the animals mentioned I Kings V, 3) were used for puddings. Yoma 75a (ref. to בפרור בשלו, Num. XI, 8) וכ׳ ק׳ צ׳ . .. להם שירד מלמד this intimates that, with the manna, the ingredients for puddings came down &c. Keth. 65a ק׳ לצ׳ יין wine for puddings. Pes. 56a; a. e.

ציר I m. (צור; cmp. זוריון, זיירא) juice, brine. Sifra. Sh'mini, ch. IV, Par. 3 (ref. to Lev. XI, 12) לאסור שקן וכ׳ ורוטבן צירן את 'abomination' is used to imply the pro- hibition of their brine or soup &c. Ib. ורוטבם צירם לאסור. Ab. Zar. II, 6 (35b) דגה בה שאין צ׳ (read בו) brine in which no fish is distinguishable. Ib. 40a בצירן in their brine (without the fish), opp. בגופן. Hull. 99b; a. fr.
ציר, צירא ch. same. Targ. Y. Lev. XI, 11 צידיהון ורועדיהון, readציריהוורוטביהונtf(v. Sifra quot. in preced.). - Ab. Zar. 40a בירן מטבילנא הוה I used to dip (bread &c.) in their brine. Y. Ter. VIII, 45b bot. דמורייסא צ׳ הדין (not מור׳) the brine of muries.
ציר II m. (b. h.; צור) hinge, pivot. Men. 33a; Erub. 11b צ׳ היכר, v. אבקתא. Kel. XI, 2; Num. R. s. 12, v. פותה.. Erub. X, 12 התחתון צ׳ מחזירין you may bring back to its socket the lower pivot (of a door of a chest &c.). Yoma. 39b וכ׳ דלתות וצ׳ the turning hinges of the Temple door were heard &c.; a. fr. -Pl. צירין,צירים. Y. Na. VIII, 57a bot וכ׳ צ׳ שומרי איסטרטיוטות (not ושומרי) Roman soldiers were stationed in Jerusalem as guards of the hinges (of the Temple gates); Tosef. Pes. VII, 13 צורים ed. Zuuck. (corr. acc.). Bekh. 45a לאשה צ׳ כך לבית שצ׳ כשם as a. house has hinges (doors moving in sockets), so a woman's body has hinges (in her sexual organs; ref. to ISam. IV, 19 ריהg). Ib. בשר צירי (the sockets and pivots in the male body are merely) hinges of fesh (muscles, not separate orgahi8); a. e.
ציר III m. (b. h.; צור; cmp. חבל) writhing, agony, throes of birth. -- Pl. צירים. Pesik. R. s. 36 צ׳ אותם ויאחוז יולדה כצירי and pangs like those of a travailing woman shall seize them (v. Is. XXI, 3).
