XXXVIII, 26 צפירא; a. fr. - Yoma 66b מאי סגיאין חובין דדרי דין צ׳ (ללל) שהי Ms. M. (v. Rabb. D. צפירה II f. (b. h. circle, turn; crown; צפר, v. צפר II) 1) circuit. Y. Erub. I, end, 19d (ref. to ויצפר, Jud. VII, 3) בצ׳ חוזרין הן ולמה and why were they to go home on a circuitous route?- 2) circle, suite of body-guards. Mekh. B'shall., Shir., s. 3; Yalk. Ex. 244 מקיפתו צ׳ ועליו . . . מלך וכ׳ a king that enters a city, and about him is a circle of guards that surrounds him, and his mighty men &c. -- 3) a round of twit, border. Tosef. Kel. B. Mets. V, 5 סרוד צ׳ של (ed. Zuck. צפורה) a frame with a rim (of plaited ropes &c.), if it has handles, is susceptible of uncleanness. Kel. צפיתא f. (צפיp lamp. Gen. R. s. 63, end (transl. צפה הצפית, Is. XXI, 5) צ׳ . .. אתרא אית . . . מנרתא סדר arrange the lamp; . there are places where they call a lammp tsafitha; Yalk. ib. 111; Yalk. Is. 288.
צפן (b. h.; cmp. צפה) 1) to look up to, respect, regard, v. ספן. -- 2) to provide, store away, reserve, guard; to hide. Deuut. R. s. 70ref. to Prov. II, 1)וכ צופן ואני... צופנים אתםyou treasure up learning and good deeds with me in this world, and I treasure up for you good reward in the hereafter (ref. to Ps. XXXI, 20); Cant. R. to VII, 14; a. e. - Part. pass. צפון; f. צפונה; pl. צפונים, צפונין; צפונות. Midr. Prov. to ch. II וכ׳ הצ׳ מטוב . . . תורתי להצפין זכיתם אם if you do well, guarding my Law (making provision for the study of the Law), I will satisfy you out of the good which is reserved for the hereafter (ref. to Ps. l. c.). Lev. R. s. 2 (ref. to וכ׳ צפנה, Lev. I, 11) לפניו צ׳ שהם .. מעשיהם כנגד this is ttypical of the deeds of Abraham . , which are stored up before him (the Lord, for the benefit of their descendants); v. צפונה. Midr. Prov. l. c. (ref. to יצפן, ib. II, 7) לו צ׳ . . . שאדם משעה while man is formed in his mother's womb, (the reward for) the Law which he wil study is reserved for him. Succ. 52a (play on הצפוני, fIoel II, 20) וכ׳ בלבו ועומד שצ׳ הרע יצר זה that means the evil inclination that constantly lies in waiting in the heart of man. Gen. R. s. 90; Yalk. ib. 148, v. יפע; a. fr. Nif. נצפן to be reserved, kept. Tanb. ed. Bub. Yithro 8 וכ׳ לשלש ונ׳ and he (Moses) was reserved for three months (for the giving of the Law in tthe third month, Ex. XIX, 1); Yalk. Ex. 27 1; ib. ונצפון (corr. acc.). Hif. חצפין 1) to guard, provide; to remove, hide. Midr. Prov. l. c., v. supra. Deut.Rt. s. (play on צפנה, Deut. II, 3) ממנו עצמיכם הצפינו hide yourselves from him; a. eu- 2) (denom. of צפון II) to turn north. B. Bath. 25b יעפין let him turn towards the north (in prayer). -- 3) (denom. of צפוון I) to brighten, leanse with soap, v. צפוון I. -- 4) (in enigmatic speech) to enlighten. Erub. 53b .. היכן פיננו צפון unhide' unto us where R. . . . is hidden; [Rashi refers to צפה, with emphatic ג].
צפנת pr. n. f. Tsaf'nath. Gitt. 58a שמה פניאל בת צ׳ her name was Ts., daughter of Peniel; צופין שהכל צ׳ ביופיה she was named Ts. (the bright), because all looked at her beauty.
צפעון m. (b. h. צפעני) adder. Num. R. s. 10; Lev. R. s. 12, v. פרש; Yalk. Prov. 960 (also צפעוני).
צפף (cmp. טפף I) to touch closely, press; to squeeze into, weave (v. ציפא). Midr. Till. to Ps. XVIII, 41 וצק השחיל וכ׳ בעצמו הוא ed. Bub.
