XIX, 17 וכ׳ מלמד נצפפו ויתיצבו they placed themselves', tthey huddled together, which intimates that they were afraid &c.; Mekh. Yithro, Bahodesh, s. 3 נכפפו וכ׳ (corr. acc.; the entire paragraph is to be emended atter Yalk.). - [Hif. היצם, היציף, v. וף.]
צפצף I (v. preced.) to press, break through. Lev. R. s. 34 וכ׳ לצאת מצפצפת שנפשך בשעה when thy soul shall press to get out of thy body (when thou art dangerously ill), I will restore it to thee. Nithpa. נצטפצף (cmp. צמצם) to be pressed, be in want of. Men. 85b וכ׳ אנשי נצטכצפו Ar. (ed. להן נצרכו, Ma. M. נצטרכו, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note) the Laodiceans were in want of oil.
צפצף ch. some; part. pass. מצפצף scarce. Y. Succ. III, end, 54a תמן מצפצפין הוון תרונגייא Ethrogim were scarce there.
צפצף II 1) (v. צוף) to shine, be bright. Cant. R. to VI, 10 מצפפצפת . . . גאולתן כד . . אורה שבקעה . . ראי tthey saw the first dawn (v. אילה) whose light burst forth, when R. H. said .. ., so will the redemption of Israel break forth in brightness; [in parallels, Y. Ber. I, 2c; Midr. Till. to Ps. XXII, a. e. our w. is omitted; perh. it ought to read; מפוצצת, v. פון]. -2) (b. h.) [of voice, cmp. צנ, to be shrill,] to scream; to chirp. R. Hash. 16b sq. ומצפצפין לגיהנם דורדין וכ׳ ועולין they (he half-wicked) will go down to Gehenna, but when they scream (ih prayer), they will be permitted to come up again, as it is written (Zech. XIII, 9); (Yalk. Zech. 582 Ms. ועולין אחת שעה כמו ומצפצפין, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 9); Tosef. Snh. XIII, 3 ומצטפצפין ed. Zuck. (corr. acc.). Yalk. Kings 1 5 מצפעף; Gen. R. s. 65 מצפצפין, v. צון. Koh. R. to VII, 8 וכ׳ מצפצפת קול בת שמעתי I heard a divine voice shrieking and saying, return &c.; ib. XII, 7; a. e.
צפצף ch. same, to squeak. Y. Dem. I, 22a top שרון מצפצפין they (the mice) began to squeak.
צפצפה f. (b. h.[ז; v. צפף. cmp. ערבה; v. ציפא) a species of willow, (growing in waterless regions). Succ. III, 3 פסולה וחצ ... נקטם if the head of the willow branch is broken off, if its leaves are spread, and if it is a tsaftsafah, it is unfit for the ceremony (v. ערבה). Ib. 34a נחל ערבי וכ׳ שגדילה לצ׳ פפרט Ms. M. (v. Rabb. D. S. a.l. note) willows of the brook (Lev. XXIII, 40), this excludes the ts. which grows in the mountains. Ib. (expl. Ez. XVII, 5) אמרתי אני ההרים בין כצ׳ עצמן שמו והן . . . רבים מים על כקח . .. Ms. M. I intended that Israel be before me like a shoot Jbby the side of many waters, which is an arabah (willow), but they made themselves like the ts. in the mountains. Ib. וכ׳ ועלה לבן שלה קנה צ׳ the ts. has a white stem, and its leaves are round &c.; Tosef. ib. II, 7; Y. ib. II, 53c bot. צפצפת. Sabb. 36a ערבה צ׳ צ׳ ערבה what formerly was called irabah, is now called ts., and vice versa; Succ. l. c. Ms. M. 2 (Ms. M. 1 וכ׳ חילפא צ׳, ed. וכ׳ חלפתא ערבתא, ccorr. acc., v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 1).

צפר I (cmp. צפה) [to be bright; denom. צפרא; (of movement) to be swifl; denom. צפפור, צפיר &c.; (of sound) to be shrill,] to whistle. Y. Hag. II, 77d bot. חד צפרית אין וכ׳ זמן when I whistle once, put your garments on &c.; ib. 78a top [read ] תמנין . . . צפרין תרין צ׳ אנא עבד בי אית וכ׳ I can do (this); Ican whistle twice and bring up eighty young men for you &c.; Y. Snh. VI, 23c bot. עביד בי אי וכ׳ זמנין תרין צ׳ נא.
צפר II (b. h. צפר, denom. of צפור) to circle (v. צפירה); to plait one round. Y. Sabb. VII, 10c top קופין דעבד ההן וכ׳ צ׳ כד he who makes baskets; when he finishes one round (on the Sabbath), he is guilty of weaving.
צפר III, צפרא m. (preced.) circle, garland. Y. Yoma I, end, 39b קבוטר צ׳ באצבעתיה ליה וחוי and he drew a circle with his finger to intimate that the name is קבוטר (with ר, and not קבוטל). - Pl. צי׳,צפריא. Koh. R. to IX, 18 (expl. האמנות, II Kings XVIII, 10) צ׳ golden wreaths (on the doors).
צפר IV, צפרא m. (בפר I) 1) morning. Targ. Gen. I, 5. Targ. Ps.
