רחמו, רחמותא f. (preced.) love; loveliness; mercy. Targ. Ez. XXIII, 17. Targ. Prov. V, 19. Ib. XVII, 9 (ed. Wil. רחמו׳; Bxt. רחימ׳). Targ. Ps. XXIX, 10 ר׳ כורסי (= h. רחמים כסא,v. עסא); a. e. -- B. Bath. 16a, vv. רחמנותא. --Trnsf. maternal instinct, giving suck to a strange animal (v. רחם, a. רחם). Bekh. 24a לר׳ חיישינן we consider the possibility of her giving suck to a strange animal.
רחמי, v. רחמין.
דחמים m. pl. (b. h.; רחם) love, mercy; (sub. בקשת) prayer. Ber. 7a וכ׳ כעסי את רחמי שיכבשו that my mercy may conquer my anger &c., v. גל. Ib. וכ׳ דחמיך שיכבשו that thy mercy &c. Ib. 10a, sq. הר׳ מן עצמו ימנע אל must not despair of mercy (cease to pray), v. מנע. Ib. 55a שלשה ר׳ צריכים three things must be prayed for. Ab. II, 3, v. קכע Lev. R. s. 2, end וכ׳ בר׳ עמו הריני Ishall be in grace with him, and he will receive me in repentance. Num. R. s. 20, beg. וכ׳ על ר׳ במדת היו הנביאים כל all the (Israelitish) prophets were benevolently disposed towards Israel and towards the nations; a. v. fr. -ר׳־ בקש to ask for mercy, to pray. Macc. 11a וכ׳ על ו׳ לבקש להן שהיה ift was their duty to pray for their generation &c. Sabb. 67a עליו יבקשו ורבים רר and the people will pray for him. Ib. 151 b על ר׳ . . לעולם וכ׳ וו מידה man must always pray concerning this con- dition (poverty), for if he does not come to it, his son will &c.; a. fr., v. בקש. -הר׳־ מדת, v. דין II. ר׳ כסא, vv. עסא.
רחמין, רחמי ch. same. Targ. Gen. XLIII, 30. Targ. Jer. XVI, 5; a. fr. -- Ber. 20b נינהו דר׳ . . . וחייבין and they (women) are bound to say prayers, for they are a mani- festation oflove (and not a ceremony). Hull. 59b וכ׳ ר׳ בעא he prayed, and it returned to its place; a. fr.; v. בעי I.
רחמן m. (preced.) merciful, compassionate, sym- pathetic; הר׳ the lMerciful, God. Tosef. B. Kam. IX, 30 (ref. to Deut. XIII, 18) וכ׳ הר׳ ר שאתה מן כל if thouu art merciful, the Merciful will have mercy on thee. Kidd. 81b וכ׳ יצילנו הר׳ the Lord save us from evil in- clinations. Midr. Till. to Ps. CIII, 13 שבאבות כר׳ ike the most merciful of the patriarchs (Abraham). B. Bath. 145b (ref. to Prov. XV, 15) ר׳ זה this means the sympathetic man. Snh. 39a וכ׳ הוא רחמים מלא ר׳ אם .. הוא ר׳ אם if he (the human king) is merciful, he puts half of them (the rebels) to death; if he is most merciful, he chastises the prominent &c.; a. fr. -- Pl. רחמנים, רחמנין. Yeb. 79a שלשה וכ׳ הר׳ . this nation (Israel) is known by three character-- istic features, they are merciful, chaste, charitable; Y. Kidd. IV, 65c; M0idr. Till. to Ps. XVII. Pes. 113b שלשה וכ׳ הר׳ חייהן there are three persons whose lives are no lives, the sympathetic, the hot-tempered, and tthe delicate. M. Kat. 27b (to those mourning to excess) אמר ממני יותר בו ר׳ אתם אי הקביה (Ms. M. omits בו) the Lord sayys, you do not bear hiimm more love than I do ?; a. e. - Pem. (b. h.) רחמנית. Tanh. Vayetse 8 את הקבתה לה אמר וכ׳ ד׳ the Lord said to her (Leah), thou art compassionate, Iwill also have compassion on hert(Rachel). - Pl. דחמניות. Meg. 14b הן ר׳ שהנשים מפני because women are com- passionate. Ex. R. s. 2, beg. הן ר׳ . מדותיו the dealings and dispositions of the Lord are full of love; a. e.
רחמן, רחמנא ch. same. Targ. Y. Lev. XXII, 2s (not רחמין, v. infra). Targ. Y. Num. XII, 13; a. e. -- Esp. רחמנא the Merciful, Glod. Targ. Ps. CXII, 4. Targ. Ex. XXXIV, 6;a. e. -Y. Ber. V, 9attop(ref. to Lev. XXII, 28)איליז וכ׳ רחמנין תהווון כד . . .ר׳ דאנא כמא. . דמתרגמין those who in the interpretation of this verse say, mmy people, as I am merciful in heaven, so shall you be mercifulccow or ewe &c; Y. Meg. IV, 75c top רחמין דאנן(corr. acc.). - Y. Kidd. I, 61b וכ׳ דלית ר׳ בריך blessed be the Lord that Ihave neither father nor mother (because it is so diffieult to do one's duty by one's parents); Y. Peah I, 15c bot. Taan. 9b ר׳ וכ׳ ליצלן the Lord save us &c., v. עיסופא; a. fr. --- Trnsf. the Vord of God, &cripture, the Law. B. Mets. 3a דרמיא וכ׳ שבועה ר the Loaw imposes an oath upon him. Ib b ר ואמר וכ׳ רמי and thehaw says, impose an oath upon him. Ker. 7a (ref. to Lev. XXI, 12) וכ ר קרייה . .. שמן the Scripture calls it oil of ordination (sacred) to intimate, that it does not lose its sacred character even after being put on his head; a. v. fr. -- Pl. דחמנין. Targ. רחמנות f. (preced.) love, mercifulness, compassion. Succ. 14a ר׳ מדת divine mercy, opp. אכזריות. Keth. 50b ו׳ מידת אלא . אני יודע I know that thou decidest so not as a matter of justice but as a matter of humaniityt. Gen. R. s. 56 אבא של מדחמנותו . . . ונופלות and tears of paternal love fell upon Isaac's eyes; a. e.
רחמנותא ch. same. B. Bath. 16a לרחמנותיה ליה מינשי דאברהם (marg. vers. לרחימותיה; Ms. H. לרחמותיה) shsll Abraham's love (of God) be forgotten (fall into disuse)?
דחמני m. = יחמן. Tanh. B'shall. 11 ר׳ שהוא אומרין וכ they say (in praise of a man) that he is merciful, he (God) is more. Mekh. B'shall., Shir,, s. 1 וכ׳ ואינו ר׳ שהוא they praise a king that he is kindhearted, yet he is cruel; Yalk. Ex. 242. Tanh. Ekeb 2 בניו על ר׳ שהוא נשר the eagle which is full of ove for its young; Yalk. Prov. 963; a. e. - Pl. רחמנים , v. רסמן. - Peomm. רמנית, v. דהמן.
דחנא, v. ריחנא.
רחף (b. h.) to move, vibrate. Pi. רחף to maove, hover, flatter. Hag. 15a (ref. to Gen. I, 2) וכ׳ בניה על שמרחפת כיונה iike a dove that hovers over her young without touching them.
דחץ (b. h.) to bathe, wash. Sabb. 122a בה לרחוץ מותר מיד it is perrmitted to bathe in it immediately (after the exit of the Sabbath); ib. 151a; Makhsh. II, 5 מיד רוחן. Ber. 15a ידיו לרחוץ . . . שאין מי (Ms. M. ליטול) he that has no water with which to wash his hands (before prayer). Tosef. Keth. VII, 6 אדם כל עם במרחן ורודעת a. woman that bathes in a bath-house with all kkind of people (loses her jointure). Y. ib. VII, 31b bot. (as a case for divorce) וכ׳ תרחצי שלא הדירה if he bound her by a vow (saying), thou shalt not bathe in a bath-house; a. fr. -- Part. pass. רחון. Zeb. 17b וכ׳ ידים רחון שלא not having washed his hands and feet (before a sacred funce tion); Tosef. Men. I, 9. Ib. 12 רחו שלא, Var. יחצו ולא.
