רכן I (cmp. preced. wds.) to be tender, soft. Pi. ריכן, Hif. הרכין to make tender; to prevent onion plants from forming hard bulbs. Y. Shebi. V, 36a top [read;] מעשר שיהא בשביל . . . מרכנו אינו . . . שניה הרתה שני in the second year (of the Sabbatical period) going over to the third, you must not soften' it (the onion plant) nor deny it water, in order that it may be subject to the second tithes (as a growth of the second year, to the deprivation of the poor man); . . . שלישית היתה עני מעשר . . . מרכנו in the third year going over to the fourth, you may 'soften and deny it water, in order that it be subject to the poor man's tithes (as a growth of the third year); Tosef. ib. רכן II (preced.) to bend. Hif. הרכין 1) to bend (act. a. neut. verb); to yield. B. Bath. V, 8, a. e. וכ׳ הרכינה, v. מצה. Num. R. s. 14l לא הוא וכ׳ לעבירה צוארו ה׳ he (Joseph) bent not his neck (did not yield) to temptation, therefore a golden chain was put on his neck; Tanh. B'resh. 12 וכ׳ ה׳ שלא צואר the neck which did not bend &c.; Lev. R. s. 23 הרכינו שלא which he did not bend. Num. R. s. 10ז ראשי את והרכנתי I bent my head (nodding approval); Y. Ned. רכפא, דכפה f. (cmp. Syr. רקפתא, Low, Pf. 307) I) a tuberous-rooted plant used for dyeing, sow-bread (cyclaminus). Shebi. VII, 2 (Ms. M. ארכפה; Maim. רכבנה). - 2) ר׳ של בצל tuber of rikhpa, a kind of onion. Maasr. V, 8. Tosef. ib. III, 14; Y. ib. V, end, 52a שעוקצו כל ר׳ של ב׳ איזהו וכ׳ what is the nature of a rikhpa onion? Its tail is squeezed into its inside; R. S. b.
