1o5b וכ׳ ש׳ ליה דקביל כיוון דש׳ טעמא מאי why is a gift (to the judge) forbidden? As soon as he accepts a gift from a person, his mind has become attached to him (the giver, v. קרב), and he becomes like his own self, and none can see the unfavorable side of his own case (v. preced.); a. e. -- 2) singling out, choice, discretion. שוחה f. (b. h.; שוח, v. שווחא) 1) pit, pitfall. Sifre Deut. 20 וכ׳ וש׳ . . כשהייתם אם (v. Jer. II, 6) when you. were in the Vand of deserts and pitfalls you wanted no spies, and now &c. -- 2) low talk, whisper, v. שיחה .

שוט I (b. h.) [to swing, be light, move to and fro; v. שוט II,] to roam, fy, float, swim. M. Kat. 14a לשוט if he goes abroad to roam (for mere pleasure), opp. למזונות for support, להרויחא for profit in business. B. Bath. 15b (Satan says) וכ׳ בכל שטתי Iroamed all over the world, but have found none so faithful as &c. Bets..V, 2 (36b) שטין לא המים פני על you must not foat on the water (swim on the Sabbath). Y. Shek. VI, 50a top (ref. to Ez. XLVII, 5) מלשוט שחו מי המים גאו כי (omit שחו מי מהו, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l., p. 55) the waters were risen . . too high for swimmoing; a. e. - [Y. B. Mets. שוט I, מישוט ש׳ pr. n. pl. ShotgMishot, Samosata, one of the fords of the Euphrates (v. Neub. Geogr. p. 33, a. Sm. Dict. of Gr. a. Rom. Geogr. s. vv. Euphrates). Kidd. 72a וכ׳ בין מ׳ ש׳ Samosata is situated between the rivers (Euphrates and Tigris).
שוט II m. (b. h.; שוט I) rod, scourge. Mekh. B'shall, Amalek, s. 2 וכ׳ לוקין שישראל ש׳. . . מדה כך such is the rule going through all generations, the scourge (nation) wwith which the Israelites are smitten, will finally be smitten; Yalk. Ex. 265.
שוטא ch. same. Targ. Prov. XXVI. 3 שוטא Ms. (ed. שי׳, שוו׳). Targ. Y. Num. XXII, 27; a. e. - M. Kat. 28a bot. דנודא ש׳ ליה אחוי he (the angel of death) showed him a. rod of fire. - Pl. שוטין, שוטי. Lam. R. introd. (R. Joh. 1) וכ׳ ש׳ בשתין לי דנקטין they urged me (the sun) on with sixty rods of fire and said to me, go, let thy light shine. Keth. 77a בש׳ הא במילי הא the one means force with words, the other, with rods.
שוטה m. (שטה) madman, fool; (of plants) wild. Hull. I, 1, a. fr. וקטן ש׳ חרש a deaf and dumb person, an insane person, and a minor. Y. Ter. I, 40b וכ׳ שש׳ ססימני the symp- toms of insanity. Tosef. Ter. I, 3 ש׳ פעמים, v. חלם I. Yoma VIII, 6 ש׳ כלב a mad dog. Ab. IV, 7 וכ׳ רשע ש׳ is a fool, a wicked man &c. Sot. III, 4 ש׳ חסיד a foolish saint; ib. 21b וכ׳ ש׳ חסיד דמי היבי what is meant by a foolish saint? When, for instance, a woman is drowning in the river, and he says, it is not becoming to look at her and save her. Shebi. VII, , sq., v. לוף; a. v. fr. -- ש׳ בכור, vv. בוכרא I. -- Pl שוטים, שוטין. Y. Ter. l. c. וכ׳ בש׳ שוטה אפי׳ not even the most insane person will do that. Ab. Zar. IV, 7 יאבד הש׳ מפני עולמו shall God destroy his worrld on account of the fools (who worship natural objects)?
