Hithpa.7aהשתח to separate one's self, be eexclusive, lofy. Sifre Num. 131 וכ׳ ומשתחעת מתגאה זו מלכות this proud and overweening government has only four provinces worthy of an empire &c.; Yalk. Num. 771; Yalk. Deut. 809. Ab. d'R. N.l. c. [read;] משתחן שהוא ןaשח the lion is called shahats, because he is proud.
שחץ m. (preced.) aristocratic, proud, vainglorious, pompous. Pesik. Par., p. 40a ש׳ שהיה . . . למימר לך אית will you say of that righteousman(Simeon the high priest) that he was vainglorious?; Y. Shek. IV, 48a bot. שיחן היה. -- Pl. שחצים. Pesik. l. c. היו ש׳ וכולם and all of them (those high priests that made such a display) were osten- tatious people, v. שחצית. Lev. R. s. 20 היו ש׳ they (Nadab and Abihu) were aristocratic (deeming no woman noble enough for them); Midr. Till. to Ps. LXXVIII, 63 שחצנין (ed. Bub. שקרנין, corr. acc.); Yalk. ib. 822 שחצין.
שחץ I m. (v. שחץ, part. pass)) 1) [separation,] ob- scenity, abomination, disgrace. Sabb. 62b שש׳ אנשי. . . אנשי היו the men of Jerusalem were lovers of obscene tal; (Yalk. Is. 264 שחוצים). Pes. 3b פסול ש׳ (they found in him) obscenity which made him unworthy of the priest- hood; (Rashi; pride). Tanh. Vaera 9; Ex. R. s. 8 ועשה לך בעולם ש׳ אלוה עצמו שעשה מי go and make him that made himself a god an abomination in the world; ib. . . . וכן בעולם ש׳ נעשה and so Sennacherib prided himself, and became an abomination &c. Ib. שחצו ומראה . . ממלא אאני לבריות I fill the upper and the lower regions with him (his repute), and let people see his disgrace; Tanh. l. c. שבחן (corr. acc.). Ib. וכ׳ ש׳ מראה הקב'ה the Lord shows all men the disgrace of the proud; a. e. -- Pl. שחצים. Ib. (ref. to Job XLI, 26 ןaשח בני) בעולם ש׳ . . . הגיותנין אלו this means the proud that make themselves gods; the Lord makes them abominations in the world. -- 2) (b. h.) pride, v. supra.
שחץ II m. (b. h., Job XXVIII, 8 ש׳ בני; שחץ) [tearer, or proud,] surname of lion. Ab. d'R. N. ch. XXXIX; sec. Vers., ch. XLIII (ed. Schechter); Yalk. Prov. 959, v. ןaשח.
שחצא ch. same. Targ. Ps. XVII, 12 Regia (ed. שחלא).
שחצית f. (v. שחץ) ostentatiousness. Y. Shek. IV, 48a וכ׳ היתה גדולה ש׳ there was great love of display among the sons of the high priests.
שחצן m. v. שרץ.
שחצנית f. (preced.) loving display, vain. - Pl. שהצניות. Y. Sabb. VI, 7d וכ׳ מתרתן והיא ש׳ שהנשים עי because women like display, and one might untie them (those ornaments, to show them) to their neighbors, and in forgetfulness walk with them &c.
שחק, סחק (b. h.; interch. with צחק q. v.) to be bright; to laugh, est, play. Tosef. B. Kam. II, 2 הבקר בין ס׳ וכ׳ ed. Zuck. (Var. צחבין, צהבין, read; בין צחק) if he (the ox) Sported among tthe herd tthree immes (doiing no harim). Deut. R. s. 3, end לעבד שוחקת . . . ראה he king saw her smile at one of his servants. Y. Kidd. III, 63a לא מימי וכ׳ ש׳ never did a person have his sport with me, exceptt this man. Tanh. Naso 5 לששחוק. . . אבל שחקת שבפנים באותו thou didst fool him (the watchman) that was inside, but thou canst not fool me. Der. Er. Zutta ch. V בוכה ולא וכ׳ שוחק ולא השוחקים בין nor should one weep anmong those who laugh, nor laugh among those who weep; a fr. -- Trnsf. (of fingers) to be spread, opp. עצב. Succ. 7a טפח שוהק (Ms. M. a. Ar. ס׳); Erub. 3b שוהקות, v. אמה; a. e. Pi. שיחק, ס׳ same. Tanh. l. c. וכ׳ מששחקת את באישך thou canst fool thy husband, but thou canst not fool me. Ib. וכ׳ על ומשהק יושב ואני but I sit laughing at my crea- tures. Tosef. Keth. IX, 2 בה הוא מסתק ed. Zuck. (Var. מצ׳) he may laugh at her (and take the sham sale serious- ly); (Keth. 79a מצהק רצה), v. פיסטין. Tanh. Noah 5 והיו ממנו משחקין they laughed at him (Noah). Ber. 7b, a. e. לו משחקת השעה the hour smiles on him, i. e. he is in luck; a. fr. Hif. השחיק to cause to laugh, lead to sport. Gen. R. s. 22 וכ׳ שמחהו להשחיקך . . . בא אם if thy inclination comes to incite thee to merriment, rejoice it with words of the Law; Yalk. Is. 296.
שחק, v. שחוק.
שחק (b. h.) to rub, grind, pound. Midr. Till. to Ps. XVIII באלו אלו שוחקין שהן שחקים . . . ולמה why are the clouds named sh'hakiomf Because they rub against one another. Gen. R. s. 13, a. e., v. שחק II. Bets. II, 8 שוחקין וכ׳ הפלפלין את you may grind pepper on the pepper-mill (on the Roly Day). Y. Ber. VI, 10a top וכ׳ שהקן if he mashed them (the turnips), he must say the benediction &c., opp. הן בעיינן אם if they are in their natural shape; a. fr. -- [Yalk. Cant. 988 שחק, v. ןaשה.-- Part. pass. שחוק; f שחוקה; pl. שחוקים, שחוקין; שחוקות a) ground, pounded, mashed. Y. Ber. l. c. הוא ש׳ לאו ויין is wine not a product gained by pounding?; ib. היא ש׳ לאו ופת is not bread a product &c.?; ib. וכ׳ הן שש׳ פbאע. . . שאר all other things, although produced by pounding (like olive-oil &c.) are ritually treated as it in their natural state; a. e. - b) (cmmp. שחף) lean, meagre. Y. Dem. II, beg. 22b היא שחוקה (R. S. to Dem. II, 1 שחיקא ch.) the fig of Bozrah is stunted. Pi. שיחק 1) same; part. pass. משוחק; pl. משוחקים, משוחקין rubbed, worn-out, threadbare. Tosef. Men. I, 8; Zeb. 18a, v. רשל; ib.b; a. e. - 2) to curse the memmory of a person, v. next w. Nif. נשהק to be ground. Ab. d'R. N. ch. Iעצמותיו נשחקו his bones were ground, i. e. his memory is cursed, v. next w.
