*שיפודא m. (שפד) sticking in, insertion. B. Bath. 37b וכ׳ עו בשיפודיה. .. מאן האי Ar. (ed. משיפוליה) if one sells a palm tree to his neighbor, the latter has the ownership of the soil in which it is rooted, down to the deep; Arakh. 14b וכ׳ ועד משיפולא. -V. שפודא.
שיפווניות, v. סיפווניות.
שיפוט, שפ׳ m. (שפט, v. שפטא) childishness, folly, vanity. Koh. R. to I 15 (expl. רע ענין, ib.) של שיפוטו זה ממון this is the folly of greed for wealth (because it is never satisfied); גזל של שיפוטו זה this is the folly of rob- bery (because it is the foremost among the accnsers of man before the throne of God); ib. תורה של שיפוטה זה וכ׳ this is the vanity of study, because one learns and forgets again. -- Pl. שיפוטים, ש׳ (e faca) boyish things, sport, (euphem. for) sodomy. Ex. R. s. 8 (ref. to II Chr. XXIV, 24) ש׳ אלא שפטים א'ת read not sh'fatim (punish- ment) but shipputim (sport); Tanh. B'shall. 25; ib. Vaera 9.
שיפוי, שפ׳ I m. (שפה I) planing, shavings, chips. Mol. III, 8 (14a) בשפוי (Talm. ed. בשפויי, Rashi בשפוי); Tosef. ib. I, 25 ed. Zuck. (Var. בשפוד, corr. acc.); Tem. stb, v. נבייה. - Pl. שיפויים, שיפויין, ש׳. Ab. Zar. 42b top מותרין ושיפוייה. . ש׳ והא but there are the chips, when the idol itself remains, and yet it is said, if the gentile chipped an idol for its own sake (to embellish it), itself is forbidden, but the shavings from it are permitted to be used. שיפוי, שפ׳ II m. (שפה II; cmp. שפע) incline, slant- ing. Hull. 19 כובע ש׳, v. כוכע. Ib. 20a ראשו ש׳ where the back of its head begins to slant towards the neck.
שיפויין f. pl. (v. שיפוי I) [chipst,] name of a sort of cakes. Targ. Y. IIx. XVI, 31 1(Y.Iאשיששיין; h.text צפיחת).
שיפול, שפ׳ m. (שפל) lower part, extremity. - Pl. שיפולים, שיפולין, ש׳. Lam. R. to I, 9 (expl. בשוליה, ib.) בשיפוליה on her skirts. Sabb. 98b ושפוליהוכ׳. .. לאשה ikke a woman that walks in the street, and her train drags behind her. Tosef. Ohol. XIII, 9 אוהלין שיפולי the train of tents; (Ohol. VII, 2, v. שיפוע); a. e. מעים־ שיפולי the lower part of the abdomen. Nidd. IX,8 contrad. to כרס. Yeb. 80b כנשים מ ש׳ לה שאין כל a woman the formation of whose lower abdomen is not that usual with women.
שיפולא, שפ׳ ch. same, 1) eoxtremity, bottom, train. Targ. Oant. I, 4 דטורא בש at the foot of the mountain. - Pl. ששיפולין, מיפולי, שפ׳. Targ. O. Ex. XIX, 17 (ed. Vien. שפו׳; h.text תחתית). Targ. Y. שיפון m. rye; [oth. opin.] oats. Pes. II, 5; ib. 35a (classified with barley) expl. דישדא; Men. 70a sq. Hall. I, 1. Y. ib. 57b top(ref. to Is. XXVIII, 25) הש׳ זה נסמן nisman means shifon. Ib. middle וכ׳ כוסמין מין הש׳ . . כרבנן ברם but in the opinion of the Rabbis there are only three kinds of grain, shifon is a species of spelt &c. Kil. I, 1 הכוסמין וכ׳ אינן . והש׳ spelt and shifon are not heterogeneous (may be sown together). Kel. IX, 8 (Var. in Hai Gaon שיפה, v. שיפוע, שפ׳ m. (שפע) 1) slanting, slope, skirt. Gen. R. s. 69 (ref. to Gen. XXVIII, 12) ושיפועו . . . הזה הסולם וכ׳ that ladder stood on the Temple site, and its slant reached &c.; Yalk. ib. 120. Y. B. Bath. VII, end, 15d היה מודד שיפועו ממקום או. . עשוי if a field has the shape of a. chair, is the measuring to begin where the vertical wall begins, or where the slope begins? Ohol. VII, 2 כלים הש׳ שתחת vessels which lie under the sope (of a tent, v. שיפול). Erub. 102a sq.; Sabb. 138b טפח בשיפפועה שאין when the slanting portion of a tent cover is not so large as a handbreadth, opp. to ג the horizontal part; a. e. - Pl. שיפועין, שפ׳. שיפורא m. = שופרא 1) horn, trumpet, announcement. Nidd. 38a דירחא ש׳ Ar. (ed. only ש׳) the shofar announc- ing the New Moon. Succ. 34a; Sabb. 36a Ms. M. (ed. שופרא), v. חצוצרתא. M. Kat. 27b דשכבא ש׳ קל שמע he heard the trumpet anmouncing a death in town; a. e. -- Pl, שיפורי. Ab. Zar. 40a וכ׳ דרבא ש׳ נפקי Ms. M.
