שליף m. (שלף) [sliding,] pouch on an animal's back, saddle-bag, haversack. Sabb. 154b וכ׳ ש׳ טעונה . היתה if (on the entrance of the Sabbath) his beast was carrying a bag full of grain, let him . pull it towards one side, so that it slips down of ittself; Tosef. ib. שליף, שליפא II m. (שלף) pulled off, esp. castrate. Targ. O. Lev. XXII, 24 (h. text נתוק). -- Sabb. 152a ש׳ בתמניא, v. איקא. Ib. תוכיחא ש׳ עיקרא (איקא) Ms. M. a. castrated buck, and (thou wilt) reprove ?
שליפה f. (שלף) slipping off; המנעל שליפת taking the shoe off (a form of possession, Ruth IV, 7). Y. Kidd. I, 60a top המ׳ בש׳ . . בראשונה in olden times they used to give possession by ttatking off the shoe,.
שליקה f. (שלק) boiling. Tosef. Kel. B. Mets. II, 19 ש׳ מחוסרים (vessels made of that kind of wood) require to be boiled before they can be used.

שליש m. (b. h.; שלש) 1) captain, officer. - Pl. שלישים. Mekh. B'shall. s. 1 (ref. to Ex. XIV, 7) גבורים אלא ש׳ אין shalishim means mighty men; משוללין שהיו . . , וש׳ ד'א וכ׳ another definition; shalishim . because they were hung with arms; (anoth. opin.) וכ׳ השלישי זה the shalish is the third on the chariot; formerly there were only two, and Pharaoh added one &c. -- 2) the third finger, middle- finger. Tanh. B'resh. 5 וכ׳ בש׳ וכל עוwאצב ומן and by his finger you can judge what he is (his strength), as we read (Is. XL, 12) and measured with the shalish (middle finger) &c. - 3) [the third person,] trustee, depositary. Gitt. 64a לגירושין אומר וש׳ . . . בעל if the husband says, the letter of divorce has been deposited to be kept in trust, but the trustee says, it has been given me for the purpose of divorce (I was the wife's agent for receiving the divorce). Ib.; Tosef. B. Mets. I, 10 . . . כך אומר זה משניהם נאמן הש׳ . והש׳ if one of the contestants says thus, and the other thus, and the depositary says thus, the depositary's evidence is accepted over against both. Keth. Shebi. V, beg. 35d ש׳ הביא וכ׳ קודם if the fruit reached the stage of one-third of maturity before the fifteenth of Shebat. Gitt. 70a אכול וכ׳ ש׳ והניח ש׳ ושתה ש׳ eat one-third (of the capacity of the stomach), and drink one-third, and leave vacant one- uthird &c., v. כעס. Y. Peah II, end, 17b למחצה הימנו קיבלה וכ׳ לש׳ if he rented the field on shares of one-half, or one-third &c. B. Mets. 69a בשכרך ש׳ מותר whatever profit it may bring over one-third (of its present value) shall be thine for thy labor (and the rest we will divide equally); a. fr.
שלישות f. (preced.) trust, deposit. Tosef B. Mets. I, 10 ידו מתחת יוצא שהש׳ בזמן (read; יוצאה) when the deposited object (on which the contest turns) is pro- duced by him (is still in the trustee's possession).
שלישי m. (b. h.; preced. wds.) third. Mekh. Bshall, s. I, v. שליש. Tam. VII, 4 וכ׳ היו בש׳ on the third day of the week they recited &c. Meg. I, 2. Gen. R. s. 3. Ib. s. 4; a. v. fr. -- Esp. a) לטומאה ש׳ (or sub. לטומאה) unclean in the third degree by contact with uncleanness of the second degree (שני). Toh. II, 2, sq. Hag. III, 2, v. רביעי; a. fr. - b) ש׳ relation in the third degree, second cousin. Snh. 28a, a. e., v. שני. -- c) talk about a third (absent) person, gossip, calumny (v. לישן). Midr. Till. to Ps. CXX. וכ׳ ש׳ אותו קורין הרע לשון we call the evil ongue sh'lishi, because it slays three himself (the maligner), the receiver, and the maligned. - Pl. שלישין. Deut. R. s. 2 aa, v. שלש. -- Peomm. שלישית. Taan. II, 4 וכ׳ הש׳ על when blowing the Shofr at the third benediction, one says &c. Meg. III, 4 וכ׳ בש׳ on the third Sabbath of the month we read &c. Tanh. Vaethh. 6 וכ׳ הצאן ש׳ the third time (didst thou sin, when thou didst say,) shall flocks &c. (Num. XI, 22); a. v. fr. -- Par. I, I אומר כשאתה . . . ש׳ אומר אתה אם וכ׳ שלשית when you say sh'lishith, it means the tthird in tthe count with others; when you say sh'loshith, it means in its third year.
