שסי, שסה (onomatop) to hiss. Pi. שיסה to sett on (a dog, serpent &c.). Snh. IX, 1, v. נשך; B. Kam. 23b. Ib. וכ׳ משסה פטור מאן who is exempt from responsibility ? Is he exempt that set the dog on, and is the owner of the dog responsible? Ib. 24b המשסה בחבירו חבירו . . . he who sets his neighbor's dog on a. neighbor; בעצמו הוא שיסהו if he incited the neighbor's dog against himself. Gen. שסי, Pa. שפי same. B. Kam. 24b דמשסי . . כיון וכ׳ ומשתסי ליה (Ms. R. דמשסו) since thou knowest of thy dog, that one can set him on and he will bite, thou oughtest not to have kept him. thpa. אשתשי to be set on, to bite, v. supra.
שסע (b. h.) to rend, split. - Part. pass. שסוע; pl. שסועים, שסועין cloven- footed. Yalk. Lev. 537 (ref. to Lev. XI, 26) מנין לש׳ whence do we learn that the laws of uncleanness apply to the cloven-footed animals?; לששאין מנין שש׳ that it applies to those not clovep-footed ; Sifra, Sh'mini, ch. V, Par. 4 שיסועים (corr. acc.). Pi. שימע same. Zeb. VI, 5 וכ׳ ולא שי׳ he rent (the sacrificial bird), but did not sever it entirely. Tosef. ib. שסתם (Shaf. of סתם) to enclose, lock up. Gitt. 68a שסתמיה . . ביה שדא Ar. (ed. סתמיה) he threw a chain (ooped rope) over him and enclosed his head; [Ar. drew it up, when we should expect שסתמה]. 2) sfa, the first element of the word שעטנ, phonetic- ally representing the act of carding (v. שוע). שעבד (Shafel of עבד) 1) to suhject, subjugate, sur- render; to obligate, pledge. Gen. R. s. 44 (ref. to Gen. XV, 13) וכ׳ משעבדן שאני ידוע knowing means that I will surrender them as slaves, 'thou shalt know, that I will redeem them. Pesik. R. s. 15 בשבעים משעכדינו שהוא... כך לא וכ׳ has not the Lord said, that he will make us the subjects of seventy nations? Ib. [read:] באחד ומשעבד בא אחד גותי אומתו כל ששיעבדה כגון ממנו one Goth comes and enslaves one of us, that is as much as if she (Rtome) had enslaved all of us; Cant. R. to II, 8. Gen. R. s. 85 (ref. to Is. LX VI, 7) וכ׳ ראשון משעבד . . . קודם before yet the first oppressor (of Israel) was born, the last redeemer was born. R. Hash. III, 8 (ref. to Num. XXI, 8) לבם את ומעבדין . . . בזמן וכ׳ לאביהם when the Israelites looked upward and pledged their heart s to their Father in heaven, they were healed; a. fr. - Part. pass. משועבד; pl. משועבדים, משועבדין. Num. R. s. 5 הארון לפני מש׳ אלא . . שלא they were not haughty, but bore themselves like servants before the Ark. Y. Hag. III, 79b להלכה מש׳ הכל שיהא so that everything be made suhject tto the law; a. e. - משש׳ נכסים, or משועבדין (sub. נכסים) morltgaged property, i. e. property bought from a person who owes a debt collectible from his landed estate in whatever hands it may be, opp. חורין בני prop- erty in the hands of the debtor. Ib. 37b ראשון לרבו ישתעבד he is the slave of his first (original) master; שני לרבו . . . ישתעבד לא he is the slave neither of his first master, nor of his second master (his redeemer). Pesik.
