שפופרת f (=שפרפ׳, v. שופר) [something round,] tube; ביצה של 'שש egg-shell. Nidd. 21b. Erub. 43b, v. מצופות. Lev. שפחה f. (b. h.; v. משפחה) [attached to the house- hold,] handmaid, slave. -- חרופה ש׳, v. חרופה. -- Snh. 39a לשמשו ש׳ לו . . . נטלו they took a rib from him (Adam), and gave him a handmaid to wait on him. Ib. 99b מוטב וכ׳ זו לאומה ש׳ תהא better for her to be a handmaid to this nation than a mistress to any other nation. Kidd. III, 12 ונכרית ש׳ ולד the child of a slave or of a gentile woman. Ib. 13 וכ׳ ש׳ שנשא ממזר if a bastard married a. slave, their child is a slave. שפט (b. h.; v. פטט, s. v. פטטא) [to divide; cmp. גזר,] to decree, decide, judge. Ruth R. to I, 1 ששפטו לדור אוי להשפם צריבין . . . woe to the generation that judge (cri- ticise) their judges, and woe to the generation whose judges need to be judged; B. Bath. 15b (ref. to Ruth l. c.) דור וכ׳ ששופט it was a generation that judged its judges &c., v. קיסם. VII, 1 וש׳ (only); Y. ib. I, 19c. Gen. R. s. 60 וש׳ דווין Ar. (ed. ושפופין) broken down and crushed (poor); a. e. - 2) to rub, smooth, ptane. -- Part. pass. as ab. a) smooth. Koh.
