[ ש yhia (ש Sin), the twenty-frst etter of the alpha- bet. - ש interchanges with ת, e. g. שוב, ch. תוב; נשר ch. נתר; פשר a. פתר &c. -- ש interchanges with ם and ז q. v. -- ש a formative letter(tor Shafell), e.g. שתרי, שתרר, שלתב ac. as numerical letter, three hundred, v. א׳. -) (b. h.) a prefix == אשר, who, which, that, for &c. שאב (b. h.) to draw water; to attract, absorb, imbibe, Mikv. II, 6 לשאוב נתכוין שלא for he had no intention to draw water. Sabb. II, 4 שואבת שתהא בשביל in order that it (the wick) be soaked. Gen. שאול c. (b. h.) nether world, grave, depth. Erub. 54a (fr. Ben Sira) וכ׳ תענוג בש׳ שאין for there is no pleasure in the grave, and death knows no tarrying. Ib. תאמר ואם לך יודה מי בש׳. . . Ms. M. שאור m. (b. h. שאר; שאר to swell, rise) 1) rise, swelling Maasr. I, 2 ש׳ משיטילו התמרים (Ar. סאור) dates are sub- ject to tithes when they begin to swell (rise like dough), expl. Y. ib. 48a bot. החרין משיתמלא, v. חרן; Y. Dem. I, 21c bot. -- 2) leaven. Hall. II, 6 וכ׳ ושאורן הם if they (the quantities of flour) with the leaven put in and the bran... make up the five Kabs.
