תפוח m. (b. h.; תפה I) [round;; 1) apple; apple tree. Kil. I, 4 וכ׳ והחזרד הה׳ the apple and the crab-apple - although resembling each other, areheterogeneousc(כלאיס). Cant. R. to VIII, 5 וכ׳ עושה זה ת׳ מה as the apple tree brings forth fruit in Sivan, so the Law was given in Sivan. Ib. וכ׳ מוציא זה ות׳ . . . אילן כל every other tree produces first its leaves, and then its fruit (buds), but the apple tree produces its buds first, and then its leaves; even so Israel advanced doing to hearing; Sabb. 88a; Oant. R. to II, 3. Ib. וכ׳ איסר בו נותן אתה זה ת׳ מה (not איסור) as the apple, for which you pay an lsar and whose scent you enjoy many times, so &c. Num. R. s. 19 ו (expl. הר ההר, Num. XX, 22) גדול ת׳ גבי על קטן כת׳ הר גבי על הר a hill upon a hill, like a small apple on a large apple; a. fr. -- Pl. תפוחים, תפוחין. Cant. R. to II, 5 ההגדות אלו כת׳ . that means the Haigadoth whose flavor and taste are like those of apples. Men. 28b הכרתיים תפוחי, v. כרתי; a. fr. - 2) (from its shape) a) עקב ת׳ the fleshy part of the heel. Pesik. Par., p. 36b וכ׳ עקיבו ת׳ the apple of Adam's heel outshone the globe of the sun; ib. Ahare, p. 170; Lev. R. s. 20; a. e. - b) pile, esp. the place on the altar where the ashes were piled up. Ab. Zar. IV, 8 לת׳ ונותן . . פbאאע although the gentile may take grapes in his hand and put them on the pile. Tam. II, 2 והת׳ ח׳ גaע . . החלו וכ׳ היה they began to put the ashes on the tappuah, and the t. was in the centre of the altar, containing at times as much as &c.; Hull. 90b. *תפוס m. (תפס) a piece of wood fastened to a saddle, which is grasped on mounting (Rashi). Erub. 27a (ed. Sonc. תפות, v. Rabb. D. S. a.l. note 9); Tosef. Kel. B. Bath. II, 7 תופס ed. Zuck. (oth. ed. תופו׳; R. S. to Kel. XXIII, 2 תפית); v. תפית.
תפוסה, תפושה f. (תפס) 1) part. pass. of תפס, .. v.- 2) seiעing, possession; הבית תפוסת that mhich belongs to the house, estate (before division among heirs). B. Bath. 137b הבית בת׳ . . . האחין if brothers acquire an Ethrog out of the estate. Gen. R. s. 75 מתפיסת כלום . . תאמר אל הבית say not, when he (Jacob) went out . . ., he took with him something that belonged to the (paternal) estate; a. e. -- Esp. earth surrounding a buried corpse, wwhich belongs to the dead, and must be taken along when transferred. תפות, v. תפית.
תפח I (Tafel of נפ־) to be blown up, swell. Pes. III, 4 (48b), v. לטש. Sabb. 91a וכ׳ ותפחה . . . הוציא if he carried. out (on the Sabbath) the size of half a dried fig, intend- ing to sow it, and it swelled (to the size of a whole fig) &c., v. צמק. Tosef. Shebi. II, 14 שיתפח כדי in order that it (the dung) may swell (or become moist, v. תפח III). Mikv. VII, 7 המים שיתפחו כדי that the water may rise in volume. Num. R. s. 9 ז צוארה ויתפח (not ותפח) and her throat shall swell. Y. Ter. II, 41 top הצמק את רואה אתה ת׳ כאילו look upon the shrivelled fruit as if it were blown up (of full size). Ib. לתפוה, v. הפה; a. fr. - Part. pass. תפוח round and smooth. Y. Nidd. III, 50a bot. ת׳ ראשו כתורמוס the head (of the embryo) is round and smooth as a lupine; כקרקבן as a bird's maw.

תפח III = טפח II, to drip, be moist. Tosef. Shebi. II, 14, v. תפח I. B. Mets. 59b Ms. R. 2, vv. טפח II. -- Part. pass. תפוח a) decaying. Sabb. 128b top ה׳ בשר spoiled meat (Ms. M. תפל, v. Rabb. D. S. a.l. note). - b) languishing, faint (from starvation). Snh. 63b ומוטל ת׳ שהיה הינוק מצא באשפה he found a child that was faint and lying prostrat- ed on a dunghill; Sifra B'huck. Par. 2, ch. VI אחד מצא ברעב ומוטל ת׳ (insert תינוק); ib. טפוחי כל על מחזר שהיה רעב; Snh. l. c. תפוחי he (Elijah) went around vvisiting all those languishing from starvation; Yalk. Lev. 675; a. e.
תפח I ch. same. - Part. pass. תפיח, תפיתא. Sabb. 12b בת׳ לשיולי Ms. M. (ed. בתפיחה) to inquire after the health of (visit) a sick person..
תפח II, Ithpe. אתפח, Ithpa. אתפח (v. נפח; cmp. נשם) to breathe, restt; to get welt, recover. B. Mets. 30b אאותבנהו מיתפח וקא he put the bundles down and rested. Ber. 46a וכ׳ קטינא מתפח אי if K. . . . recovers, I will make a feast for &c. B. Mets. 87a וכ׳ וא׳ דחליש . . אאלישע עד Ms. M. (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note) until Elisha's days nobody was ever sick and recovered; then Elisha came and pray- ed, and he recovered; (Ms. F. ואיתפותי איקצורי הוה לא there was no such a thing as being sick and recovering; ואיתפוחי למיחלש . בעי Elisha prayed for sickness and recovery); Yalk. Gen. 105.
תפח m. (תפח I) blown up, swollen (fgs, dates &c.). Y. Ter. II, 41d top לתפוח הצמק דרך ואין לצמוק הת׳ דרך what is blown up (is in its full size) is liable to shrink, but what is shrunk is not likely to swell again.
