PREFACE.

Acknowledgment is gratefully rendered to Mrs. Oliveretta O. Wharton, Dr. Joseph A. Phillips and others of the family for assistance rendered in the preparation of this volume. The brief statement concerning the Mahon family is based, largely, on a more extended account written a number of years ago, loaned to the author by David W. Mahon, Esq., of Washington, D. C. The facts given in regard to the McAllister family have, as their main authority, old family letters loaned by F. A. Mitchel, Esq., of East Orange, N. J., corroborated by information furnished by Dr. Francis H. Orme, of Atlanta, Ga.
