A KEY TO PRONUNCIATION OF CZECH LETTERS

Because my old Czech typewriter suffered from a chronic indisposition I was obliged to transliterate certain Czech diacritical marks as was best possible. Below are listed, in parallel columns, the letters in correct Czech form, then the form used in this work, and finally the English pronunciation.

Rokycana is therefore pronounced as "Ro-key-tza-na."
chč ch as ch in "church."
ch ch as ch in German "auch" or Scotch "Loch Lomon." Thus, Chelc̄icky̍ is read as "Chel-chit-skey."
chš ch as sh in "ship."S̄ti̍tny̍,
chž ch as z in "azure"; "Z̄iz̄ka."
chě che as ye in "yet." George of Podēbrady.
chř ch as rsch in "far shot." Pr̄i̍bram.
Accents on the vowels indicate length.
i,í,y,ý i,i̍,y,y̍ are all pronounced as "ee" or "ey" of varying lengths.
