Mason, John, of Southants, pleb. Magdalen Coll., matric, 25 June, 1602, aged 15; (s. John, of Kings Lynn, Norfolk), baptised there 11 Dec., 1586, entered the navy, became governor of Newfoundland 1616-22, had a grant of the province of Maine in New England jointly with Sir Ferdinando Gorges 1622; vice-president of the English council for New England 1632, treasurer of the army, and captain of Southsea Castle, with the command of the channel fleet, had a grant of the province of New Hampshire 1635, created viceadmiral of New England in Oct., 1635, but died in the following Dec.
