Pocock, Edward, born at Oxford (s. Edward), cler. Magdalen Hall, matric. 4 June, 1619, aged 15; scholar Corpus Christi Coll. 11 Dec., 1620, B.A. 28 Nov., 1622, M.A. 28 March, 1626, fellow 1628 (incorporated at Cambridge 1628), B.D. 8 July, 1636; canon of Christ Church 1648-50, and 1659, D.D. 20 Sept., 1660, Laudian professor of Arabic 1636, and regius professor of Hebrew 1648, (ejected 1651), and 1660-91, an oriental traveller and linguist, chaplain to the English merchants at Aleppo 1629, rector of Childrey, Berks, born 1603, baptised at St. Peters-in-the-East, Oxford, 8 Nov., 1604; died in Christ Church 10 Sept., 1691, buried in the choir, will at Oxford proved 14th; father of Edward 1661, and of Charles 1678.
